Great reference, would have prefered paper copy
By TB
Exceleent material, required for a class. I have found that the Kindle version is harder to look up specific charts/tables and page numbers cited in class are almost impossible to find without extensive searching. Would recommend that if you need this for a class go for the paper version.

Great book for differentiating between parasites.
By Jenni Pahmiyer
This is a great resource for learning, confirming and diagnosing parasites. There are helpful pictures and descriptions of each parasite listed. There is also a summary page for each section giving a size and shape comparison of the various parasite types.

~EXCERPT~

Spinning around, Penelope found herself nose to nose with Prince Andrew, former scoundrel, puller of pigtails, and the subject of entirely too many conversations that day. And to her dismay, he had not grown stodgy over the last few years, either. Quite the contrary.

In fact, he had grown shockingly handsome.

The prince’s face broke into a sly smile. “I knew it was you,” he said, leaning one elbow against the railing. “I recognized you the moment I saw the mud on that hem.”

Indignant words filled Penelope’s mouth, but when she glanced at her skirt she saw that it was indeed spotted with mud, probably from her trek through the stables. This was exactly why she hated skirts. They were always getting dirty, and climbing trees in them was a nightmare. She much preferred trousers.

She realized she’d just spoken the thought out loud when Andrew’s smile widened. “If there was any doubt in my mind that it’s you behind that pretty face,” he said, “It’s gone now. You’re still climbing trees, eh? You haven’t changed as much as I thought.”

“Pretty face?” She replied, planting both hands on her hips. “Spare me whatever joke you’re making at my expense.”

“…And apparently you still can’t take a compliment. You really haven’t changed a bit, have you?” Despite the dismayed shake of his head, the prince looked pleased about it, too.

She scowled. “What do you want, Andrew?”

Play "Where's Waldo" with your Fairy Tale Knowledge
By Amazon Customer
This inter-connected series of short stories was very cute and well done, but my favorite part was all the little allusions to fairy tales that were woven into the background. It made me smile every time I caught one. She blends a bit of modern technology into the fairy tales without making them either contemporary or historical--they're in their own little world--like fairy tales themselves.

While the characters were mostly of adult age, and could be enjoyed by an adult audience, I think the other reviewer pegging them as YA might be right. The content is appropriate for any age, though.

Very fun read.

Clever and inventive
By Jaimie
If you like Shrek or any kind of fairy-tale mash-up, you'll enjoy this book. It's a quick read - I read it in one sitting. I love how the stories (there are three of them, the second one my favorite) blend together via reoccurring characters so you never feel you have to reboot, like you do with some short story collections. Ellison uses technology to nice effect, and she references other fairy-tales in a way that is charming but not overt enough to be annoying -- we've all read/seen THOSE stories. I also want to add a word about the quality of this book: unlike some $0.99 titles, you're getting a polished product here.

My one complaint is that the dialogue gets bogged down with exposition in some places. However, that's not exactly unheard of nor unwelcome in the YA genre. (And I would classify this as YA.)

Updated, interwoven fairy tales
By Bookworm
I thought this was a cute idea, but the author definitely needs to proofread her work. A few examples that drove me to distraction were: The ground huddled close together; Servants threw open the doors letting in a floor of music; "the next thing I know I've been swept me into a coat pocket"; he started to reach into his jacked. Of course spell check would not have picked up on these, but re-reading your work would have.

Gr 8-10-Rush is difficult to explain and at times difficult to understand, yet it is a compelling read. As Miki Jones, a junior at Glenbrook High, is "pulled from real life," thinking she is dead, she struggles to understand a Mad Hatter universe. She encounters Luka Vijic, a former friend who has returned to Rochester, New York, from Seattle. He tells her that he, too, was "pulled" and that they are both alive, except when they are on a mission. As long as they are successful in this game that is not a game, they get to return to their lives, a process that will repeat itself. Their goal is to kill Drau, alien beings seeking to conquer Earth. Plenty of aliens and conspiracies are juxtaposed with the ordinary world of a teen struggling to balance everything in her life. Some of the characters are stereotypical and two-dimensional, and aspects of the universe that Silver has built challenge the suspension of disbelief. However, most readers won't notice and will simply zip along, hoping to figure out what's really going on.-Saleena L. From Booklist
There’s no tunnel toward the light in Miki’s near-death experience. Instead, she’s flung together with a group of other teens in an alternate universe where they must battle the alien Drau or lose their lives. Although the alien battle is framed as the Game, Miki realizes that the stakes are high as she tries to unravel the truth behind these interstellar invaders. Silver complicates her story line with the welcome addition of an Edward Cullen–like hottie, Jackson Tate (whose true identity may be more terrifying than any vampire), and a jealous friend, Carly, who doesn’t realize that Miki is being jerked from reality to the Game, rather than from boy to boy. A love triangle between solid boy-next-door Luka, Miki, and Jackson develops, but what readers may find most compelling are the habits of the Drau, whose crude attempts at human infiltration are as shocking as they are realistic. Whether teens read this for the romance or the science fiction, they’ll finish eager for the second installment of the Game series. Grades 9-12. --Erin Downey Howerton

Rush by Eve Silver
Book One of The Game series
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publication Date: June 11, 2013
Rating: 4 stars
Source: eARC from Edelweiss

Summary (from Goodreads):

So what's the game now? This, or the life I used to know?

When Miki Jones is pulled from her life, pulled through time and space into some kind of game--her carefully controlled life spirals into chaos. In the game, she and a team of other teens are sent on missions to eliminate the Drau, terrifying and beautiful alien creatures. There are no practice runs, no training, and no way out. Miki has only the guidance of secretive but maddeningly attractive team leader Jackson Tate, who says the game isn't really a game, that what Miki and her new teammates do now determines their survival, and the survival of every other person on this planet. She laughs. He doesn't. And then the game takes a deadly and terrifying turn.

What I Liked:

OH MY GOSH I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! This one is definitely going on my list of favorites at the end of the year. Yes, I didn't rate it five stars, and I have good reasons why I docked that one star, but seriously, people. I was so impressed when I finished this book. I've never read anything by Eve Silver, and I'm glad that this was the first one of her books that I read.

Miki is an incredible character. At first, I wasn't sure if I liked her or not. She's extremely tough, smart-mouthed, inquisitive, and really, in short, strong. I guess I wasn't expecting such a strong protagonist, but Miki definitely packed one heck of a punch (both in the story and as a character).

Miki is pulled when she jumps in front of a truck to save a little girl, and instead, gets killed. Sort of. She wakes up to find herself in the Lobby, waiting to attack alien creatures. Her "team" includes Jackson, Richelle, Tyrone, and Luka (Luka, she already knew from her school).

I thought the premise of this story sounded awesome - and it really was! I'm kicking myself for having an early review copy of this books for MONTHS and not reading it sooner, because I was completely sucked in to the story. This sort of reminded me of Epic by Conor Kostick, but in an obscure way. Being pulled into this different setting is sort of like being in a video game.

There is a ton of action in this book, and it almost seems non-stop. Being pulled means that you are taken into the "video game" world, and if you survive, you are dropped back into your real life, at the exact second you left. So, while a good amount of the book was spent in the "video game" world, not a lot of time passed in the real world. I loved the anticipation of fighting the creatures (called Dra) - I think Ms. Silver does an excellent job building up the tension and the nerves before Miki and the team fight the Drau.

This book is full of twists and turns! I thought it was going to go one way, and then it goes another way. I could not believe what Ms. Silver threw at us, with the bodies (not telling!). And then to find out Jackson's secret... I was shocked and intrigued! Ms. Silver definitely keeps readers guessing, but throughout the book, she tells us enough so that we won't be completely confused as we read.

Speaking of Jackson... oh man. He's the leader of the team, and he is full of mysteries. He never takes off his sunglasses, he doesn't like answering questions, and he seems to be extremely good at what he does... why? We find out as we go. He's definitely my favorite character of the book. He isn't a wimp, or a coward, or a big softy. He doesn't really have "moments". And when he tells Miki he's dangerous - he means it. This isn't like Edward telling Bella to stay away from him because he "might" hurt her (bullcrap) - I find Jackson's reasons more tragic.

And of course, he's an amazing love interest. I love his continual banter with Miki throughout the book. One of my favorite scenes of the entire book (I have many favorite scenes of this book... like, the whole thing!) is the lunch scene. Jackson isn't a soft and squishy guy - he's definitely and iron and steel guy that you don't want to mess with. But somehow, he's so lovable! And swoonworthy! And officially one of my favorite male protagonists of all time! Check out my Swoon Thursday (#22) post if you don't believe me.

That being said, I love the romance in this book. The plot is definitely NOT the romance, and the romance is second to the plot, though both are much more connected than readers believe (we find out this in the end of the book). There is a sort-of love triangle, but it's really not one at all. In any sense of the phrase. At least, I don't think it is.

The book ends in a cliffhanger, and I need Push (book two) like, yesterday. I was emotionally distraught over this cliffhanger! So, not a favorable ending. But it's a good ending! Like, well-written, makes sense with the plot, understandable, mean... I need Push.

What I Did Not Like:

There were a few things that stuck out to me that I didn't really like, and that's why this book got 4 stars instead of five. For one, the massive cliffhanger that I absolutely abhorred and possibly cried over because I couldn't believe Ms. Silver would do such a thing. Cue the water works!

Another is the amount of info dumping that happens. Readers (and Miki) get a ton of information in like, three spots in this book, all at once. When Miki firsts enters the Lobby, she gets a boatload of information then. Then she talks to Jackson when they were at the playground later in the story. And there are more spots that are smaller, but basically, the info dumping was kind of painful.

And there are some small things that were never really answered in this book (maybe in the next books?). Like, I don't really understand why the Drau are stuck in the "video game" world. And why does dying selflessly pull someone into the "video game" world? There are other questions I had, but I'm hoping that they aren't important details, or that they will be answered in the next two books.

Would I Recommend It:

Yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes.

Yes.

Go get a copy now! Buy it, borrow it, whatever, just get it! You don't have to be a video game lover (I'm not!) or a science fiction lover to read and love this book!

Rating:

4 stars. I must have re-read this book about 4 times already. It's that good, people!

Cool concept- minor issues
By Jessica Leigh (Lovin' Los Libros)
The concept behind this book was what really pulled me in. Not to mention, I'm always up for a little sci-fi! If you are not one who cares for non-realistic plots, well, this book probably isn't for you. I personally loved Ender's Game and this book was very similar in that both are fighting to ensure humanity's survival from an alien invasion.

While I overall enjoyed this book, there were quite a few elements I didn't particularly care for.

I felt like there was a lot of information overload going on in this book. I realize it is the first in the series, so Silver is setting the stage and helping us readers understand the mechanics at work in the game. However, at times I felt there was more info-dumping than there was actual plot and action. We did get some great action scenes while Miki and crew were on missions and the last 25 or so pages had me really going to see how Silver would conclude the book. (A bit of a cliffhanger, if I do say so myself.)

I liked the main character Miki, well enough. She had every right to be overly inquisitive to the point of irritation. She died and was then brought back to life and put into a game where she runs missions and then takes a break and goes back to her normal life, only to be aware that she could be pulled back at any time. So, I get the never-ending questions and her frustration with their 'team leader' Jackson. She is dealing with quite a bit, including the loss of her mother at a young age and an alcoholic father who won't admit that he has a problem. She ends up admitting she likes the rush of the game (the fear, the adrenaline, the unknown) because it actually sparks her into feeling alive- which she hadn't before. Her sadness was always there, keeping her just under enough to feel it, but not enough to make her seem depressed.

I absolutely despised Miki's best friend Carly. She was shallow, jealous, and well let's face it: a complete bitch to Miki. I realize that she was a loyal friend to her through some pretty difficult times in the past, but that doesn't make up for the way she's treating her now. Ugh. High school girl drama.

Jackson, Miki's team leader in the game, is a complete enigma. We don't really find out his deal until later on in the book. He's a bit contradictory. He tells Miki it's every man for himself in this game, but then goes out of his way to protect her. He tells her he can't talk about the game in the outside world, but continues to break rules anyway. His duality frustrated me a bit. One minute he's kind and genuinely seems concerned about Miki and answering her questions and just getting her through and the next he throws a wall up between them and is back to his cocky, self-assured attitude. He harbors a lot of secrets, which thankfully Silver does share with us bit by bit.

Then there is Luka. He is also part of the team, but has known Miki since they were kids. It seemed like Silver was going to go all love triangle on us, but I think she changed her mind and by the end there is nothing of the sort. There's not much to say about Luka, except he was kind and wanted to help Miki- he didn't think it was fair that she not know so many things about the game.

Overall, this book really showed potential. My biggest issue was all the information overload. I felt like it could have been handled differently, so that I wasn't bogged down with all the specifics and was able to flow along more smoothly with the plot. Will I be reading the second book? Probably. I like the concept and I am curious as to where Silver will take this series next. And hopefully now that we all understand (in very clear detail) how the game works, what the teams are up against, the second book can be more centered around plot and action rather than info-dumping.

I loved it!
By Mandy
I received Rush in return for an honest review from the author. Miki lives with her dad after they lost her mom to cancer she tried to keep things normal good grades and her friends but all that is about to change. When a new student arrives at school she starts hearing voices that tell her to help and save a little girl from a fatal accident. Upon saving the girl she is trust into another world where a team fights aliens in order to save the planet. They claim it’s a game but it’s real, she’s joined by Luka one of the kids from school as well as the new guy. Unlike other new players to the team Jackson takes her under his wing protecting her.

When they eliminate the threat they are thrust back into their lives time once again starts as if they have never left. Miki is confused and none of the players will explain what’s going on it’s a secret Luka won’t disclose but Jackson shows up to answer her questions. Even Luka gives in not wanting Miki to be in the dark of what’s going on. When her friends see her talking to the guys she feels betrayed so not only does Miki have aliens and attractive guys to deal with she also has to save her friendship. The aliens are ramping up for something big will Miki be able to stop them before it’s too late? Will they all make it out of the game alive?

I didn’t care for Miki at first but as the book progressed I grew to like her. She’s had a rough life and dealing with her dad after losing her mom can’t be easy. I liked Luka right away he’s a good guy who’s just trying to survive the game and I hope to see more of him in the next book. When it comes to Jackson he also captured my heart he’s not perfect, he has issues he’s the reason that Miki’s life changed but I think he’s also good for her and willing to risk his life for hers.

I was really excited to have the chance to read Rush because I’ve heard so much about the series. The concept reminds me of Enders Game but I think it’s executed better in my opinion. I love the idea that they are time traveling outside their bodies to find an alien race that is bent on destroying the people of earth. I’m kind of a sucker for a good alien story and this one rates right up there with the Lux. I really enjoyed the characters I was able to connect with them captivated by their stories as they intertwined. Rush is a captivating story that draws the reader in right from the start loaded with action, suspense, aliens, romance and a kick ass heroine to save the day. My only complaint is that it’s a cliffhanger so I need to read the next one to see how it will play out. Rush is a must for fans of YA Sci Fi and aliens. I really enjoyed the story it was hard to put down. I loved it.

“One of the most prosecuted and banned books in history, it has become a synonym for obscenity”

*Special illustrated edition contains 14 illustrations by William Hogarth (1697 – 1764). The plate prints from his series of paintings The Harlot's Progress and The Rake's Progress perfectly capture the excess and resulting moral decline of mid 17th Century England as classes rich and poor fell to vice and drink, perfectly completing John Cleland's work, herein presented index hyper-linked for ease of reference and viewing pleasure within the table of contents.

Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure tells the story of Fanny Hill who, upon the death of her parents, moves to London. Intent on making her as a maid the girl is duped into becoming a prostitute by an unscrupulous madam, Mrs Brown. Intent on selling her virginity to the highest and most esteemed of bidders, Mrs Brown places her at the disposal of Lord B.

From noblemen, drunken sailors, loving lords, and all manner of sexually promiscuous classes in between, Fanny learns the forbidden arts and practices of a skilled companion enough to seduce her one true love. But will she find everlasting happiness in his arms, or will she fall deeper into the excess and depravity

With voyeurism, birching, orgies, and menage-a-many, this genre-defining master-work, written by John Cleland in 1748, will be sure to shock and delight in equal measure now as it did near three centuries ago.

About the Author

John Cleland was an English writer who is best known for his erotic novel Fanny Hill: or, the Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure. An employee of the British East India Company, Cleland spent extended periods in Bombay, India, until recalled to England because of his father s illness. With no financial support from his family, Cleland amassed enough debt to land in Fleet Prison, where he is believed to have composed Fanny Hill, /em>. His subsequent arrest following the publication of Fanny Hill prompted Cleland to withdraw the novel, and while it was not legally published for over a hundred years, it continued to sell well as a pirated work. Cleland never achieved professional or financial success with his writing. He died in 1789.

Sexier than you might expect...
By SeattleReader
A surprising story from an era we don't associate with erotic writing.... and maybe we should. Is it realistic? No. Is it moralizing? Yes. Is it politically correct? Absolutely not! (Didn't know the word at the time Fanny Hill was written, thank goodness.) So why read it?

Because it's a piece of history. Because it serves as a reminder that my tightly-laced European ancestors were not as stodgy as history class so often leads us to believe. Because the imagery is authentic, bringing to life a time and environment that often seems mysteriously foreign. Plus, there is some delightful erotic imagery, playful scenes, and a sweet, easy-to-enjoy narrator. Even years later, descriptions of scenes sometimes flash into my mind, as they were masterfully portrayed by Cleland so many hundreds of years ago.

Personally I find it a comforting and refreshing reminder that people aren't so different, after all. And who knows, if I had been born back before the American Revolution, I might well have enjoyed reading about Fanny Hill's adventures, just as much as I do now.

Immunization: The Reality Behind the Myth, 2nd Edition, by Walene James

The only book that explores the vaccination issue from political, ethical, psychological, aesthetic, and spiritual perspectives. Using principles of general semantics to recognize propaganda, particularly medical propaganda, it points to the power of the media to create our reality. James suggests an unusual consciousness-raising plan of action to insure freedom of choice and non-harrassment of persons who choose to stay off the vaccine bandwagon. The author's controversial position is supported throughout the book by the scientific discoveries of researchers who have received little recognition in orthodox medical literature. This new, completely revised edition shows: how vaccinations damage the immune and nervous systems, the vaccine-drug-AIDS connection, how to become propaganda-proof, and how to develop new paradigms of health and preventive medicine.

Confirmed my Understanding about Vaccination Risks.
By Sam Clemens
Well documented, very accessible narrative, on the spotted history and pitfalls/risks associated with vaccination. As a holistic practitioner, this was helpful toward my reviewing this worrisome area of medicine. It comfirmed my worst fears. Bare minimum: I would be very wary about allowing my children to be vaccinated...and ESPECIALLY before the age of six months or a year. And, NO WAY with multiple dose injections, and repeated over the years. Too many horror stories about people--especially children--with awful sequelae, post innoculation.

Review
Beautifully written and makes the adventure of life and business more fun with simple, but meaningful advice. --Malcolm Bricklin, CEO, Visionary Vehicles

Edwin H. Stuart said, 'Every time you open your mouth to talk, your mind walks out and parades up and down your words.' Well, David Silverstein's strategic mind parades up and down the pages of his new book Three Steps Ahead. His premise is, 'If you train yourself to think ahead, you will most likely come out ahead.' Easier said than done, right? But the author shows exactly HOW to think ahead in a variety of high-stakes situations with compelling examples and step-by-step instructions. Brilliant. --Sam Horn, Speaker, Executive Coach and Best Selling Author of Tongue Fu! and POP!

A valuable reminder that every strategic decision needs to be considered with a short view, a long view and a birds-eye view. --Curt Thornton, CEO, Provision Interactive Technologies

simple but invaluable information for everyone
By carey cravens
I like the simplicity of the book. Silver stein does not reveal any groundbreaking must hear news. This was a book that was very simple and easy to understand, yet filled with very valuable information everyone can use. He gives examples of how people made decisions to solve issues only to later have terrible consequences that made situations even worse off. Silverstein teaches you how to look at all angles before making any disastrous moves.
He sprinkles personal and government stories to bring his points home. He shows how important it is to think steps ahead, and consequences for not doing so. ( which are called unintended consequences) he describes unintended consequences like chess playing. When you play chess you have to think ahead and anticipate your opponent's next move or should I say next moves. In plain and simple terms people need to strategies. The book is catered to business people but anyone can benefit from the importance of thinking in steps and dodging dilemmas in future.
I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.

A Useful Quick Read You'll Want to Keep Around
By PK
I loved this book. It is basically a primer on successful decision-making, with some pretty great stories thrown in to help make salient points. There aren't any shocking revelations here -- but there are clear, succinct, thoughtful chapters which outline the kinds of decision-making traps that provoke unintended consequences as well as guidelines on how to avoid them. I intend to keep it on my desk until some of the thought processes Silverstein suggests become second nature.

Not as bad as one feared
By Autamme_dot_com
Strategic thinking and the art of planning ahead is the focus of this book. The author sets out to help the reader understand and master the objectives at hand, attempting to seize the law of unintended consequences and take advantage of all that it may offer.

That’s the theory; the execution is a little different. This is a book that may be hard to overly warm to, yet it is not something to equally dislike. It sits between two stools and might benefit from the literary focus knob being tightened a little. Or maybe the book’s publicity material created the wrong impression or set up an unreasonable expectation. The further you dug into the book the better it became – or is it that your expectations are overtaken by what you has received and the actuality was the better of the two!

Written in a fairly open, informal style the book is capable of providing a lot of information and knowledge in a relative general sense. It touches on a lot more than just positive, proactive plan-ahead thinking and strategy, running all around the business world with its insights, examples and take-out points. The reader will be engaged through humour, interesting insight and sheer diversity: a lot of good basic principles, concepts and themes may be learned through osmosis. It is a great lightweight read, yet the actual content should not be dismissed as being lightweight or just a “humour book”. Far from it.

The book’s price is unbelievably low – the cost of a couple of magazines from a newsstand – to make it one of those potentially advisable “on spec” purchases. It is a short but sweet book in other words. A complex “fast food” takeaway of knowledge and opinion that surprisingly can fill quite a gap.
