Super fun book!

I loved this book! I have been a huge fan of Sandy Silverthorne's books for kids, first with my own kids and now my grandkids. I saw that he had a new book so I bought it for my grandson. When I looked through it I realized that I wanted to read it, so instead of giving it to my grandson I will let him borrow it someday! It's not a kid's book, although they would find it interesting too. It is full of so much information, some great time saving ideas and some just plain fun trivia. One of those books that you can just pick up when you have a few minutes and get a kick out of it. (Plus it has his cute illustrations!)

About the Author

John Bart Wilburn enrolled at the University of New Mexico in 1959 only to have his education interrupted by military service. He served in the US Air Force from 1962 to 1966 and was decorated for service in Operation Power Pack.

After his military career, Wilburn returned to the University of New Mexico, earning a BS in physics and mathematics in 1969 and an MS in physics in 1970. He then received an MS in optical sciences from the University of Arizona’s College of Optical Sciences in 1983.

Recruited by the National Security Agency that same year, Wilburn served as a supervising cryptologic scientist, earning awards for achievements in developing optical collection systems and cryptologic literature writing.

Leaving the NSA in 1992, Wilburn returned to the University of Arizona in Tucson as the manager of research programs at the College of Optical Sciences. He retired in 1999.

This is a comprehensive account of the progress and development of physics and the dawning of awareness of the human mind. This book would be invaluable to a freshman physics major. The resources and historical timeline tie the development of scientific theory and mans struggles to understand human consciousness into a comprehendible single volume. Amazing concept! Amazing book!

Brother and sister CALLIE MARITZ and MARI-LOUIS GUY are master bakers. They were first introduced to the hospitality industry while growing up in a small hotel on the Cape’s West Coast. Their combined careers span restaurants, hotels, catering, guesthouses, bars, nightclubs, food styling and product development. As food stylists, they regularly contribute to a host of local and international magazines and television commercials. If you want tasty and easy, then this book is for you.

Another great book by these authors but this one includes savory pies as well which are truly delicious. Makes the pot pies we are used to eating positively boring. The recipes are easy, use the ingredients that you have in your cupboard and come out as you would hope. I can't wait to see what this brother and sister team come up with next.

I have been having fun eating my way through this cookbook. It offers wonderful and approachable recipes for the beginner and leaves room for creativity by the more experienced home cook. I love the no-nonsense approach to the usual intimidating suspects, such as pastry & bread. Recipes are presented simply and come together easily. There is a nice variey of sweet & savory and contrast of classic & cultural diversity in the recipe selections. Mari-Louis and Callie have brought their love of food and family with humour and finesse to the table in their second charming publication. Worth the $5.00 international shipping rate and was received within the week. Can't wait to try the Macadamian Nut Tart next!

Doesn't answer a whole lot of questions

As one who keeps hearing the term "UX/UI," supposedly has a degree in it, but wasn't entirely sure what it was, I picked up this book, thinking it would be a good overview. The book is, in itself, an example of bad interface design. There are many, many grammatical and spelling errors. The one element I expected from the book was graphics--screenshots, diagrams, etc. The book has none. The text descriptions and examples would have been much, much, much more helpful with a few diagrams and screenshots.

I am now 80% finished with this book and have learned next to nothing, so I guess I'll have to find another book.

Another cutting edge Brian Wood title

Brian Wood is always cutting edge. Each title he writes is wildly different from the last. Starve is my new Brian Wood favorite. I’ve never read anything quite like it.

Starve takes place in a near future where global warming has left a chunk of the East Coast underwater and the Customs service has been privatized. Reality TV has been taken to a new level by Gavin Cruikshank, a chef whose television show, “Starved,” made him a celebrity. Then Cruikshank dropped out, leaving behind an angry wife and a disappointed daughter. Cruikshank’s wife is angry in part because she only belatedly learned that her husband is gay.

As the story opens, Cruikshank has gone native in Southeast Asia. His fun ends when the network insists he fulfill his contract by filming 8 more episodes. Cruikshank is pleased to learn that the show is now worth quite a bit of money, but displeased to discover that in his absence, his wife had him declared legally dead and now owns the rights to the show.

The celebrity chef challenges on Starve are more … challenging … than those offered by typical reality TV shows. And more dangerous, as Cruikshank learns when he returns to his show, which is now in the hands of a rival chef.

There’s always something deeper going on than the surface layer of the story that Brian Wood tells. Starve is about the gap between the rich and the poor. It’s about the over-consumption of resources by the privileged. It’s about the waste and excess and greed that kills the environment and assures that the poor will continue to starve. It’s about the difference between pride in doing something well and the desire to be recognized for doing something well.

And it’s about the love of food. Really good food, well-prepared.

And it’s about a father’s love of his daughter, and how that love demands that he get back in the game and make amends.

Good stuff. Really good. And the edgy, ragged, angular art is perfect for the show’s noir feel. So is the coloring, dominated by black and red.

Familiar elements in exciting, bloody setting

Starve is an intriguing blend of food culture and science fiction layered with comment on the life of the privileged and a redemption story. In the near future, the economy has collapsed, and everything has been privatized. The distinction between rich and poor is greater than ever.

Gavin Cruikshank has run away from being a celebrity chef after creating Starve, a cooking competition show. The series, now dedicated to ridiculous excess, is a huge success, and he’s been living off the profits. Although wealthy, he’s been slumming, but now, the network demands he come back to fulfill his contract. He wants to leave it all behind, but he can’t get the resources to do so without reentering the world that he despises.

Much of the comic is Gavin’s internal monologue, juicy description of what he’s thinking while he’s eating or cooking. He’s the kind of self-centered, perpetually drunk jerk people tolerate because he’s just so talented. Only everyone here hates him, particularly his not-quite-ex-wife who resents him not being honest about his homosexuality and his rival, Roman Algiers, who now runs the show.

He’s also got a daughter on the verge of adulthood whom he hasn’t seen in years and wants to reconnect with. This is all part of a classic structure, a story we’ve seen many times before, but the blood on the page — in more ways than one, as live animals are butchered, but also the portrayal of very raw emotions — is addictive in an unclean way. The setting allows for exaggerated actions that somehow seem plausible in this dog-eat-dog world. I feel nervous about enjoying this read, as though it should be forbidden. But then there’s a delicious dish described, and different wants take precedence.

The art is dirty and edgy, much like the events on the show within the story, where contestants are asked to steal a delicacy or serve dog or literally fight their way through competing chefs in another kitchen. The text and the images may only slightly be related to each other, creating meaning through layering or contrast. The art is often monochrome, everything colored in shades of one hue, creating more of an atmosphere than a detailed image to pour over. It’s about the moment, with the artists drawing the eye skillfully to punch the emotion to the reader.

Brian Wood, Danijel Zezelj, and Dave Stewart don’t credit who’s doing what, a contrast to the chef-as-star aesthetic they’re portraying. As Gavin struggles to win, although he doesn’t want to but feels he has to, everyone cheats. There’s a layer of contempt over everything — the people who want to eat delicacies, the mass that have made a mean show a success, the participants and their base motivations, the way the competition is slanted. There are no heroes in this book, although Gavin, with his posturing and eff-you attitude, will be seen as an admirable antihero by some.

Starved

Gavin was a famous chef who starred on his own TV show, Starved. Then he fell off the face of the planet after getting divorced and indulging in drugs. Once he runs out of money, he is called back to the show to finish 8 more episodes and get paid.

I was surprised that I liked this comic so much. The artwork is dark, and not really my style, but it fit the story line and I ended up liking it. I can't help but root for Gavin, even though he walked out on his family and turned to drugs in a far off country. His ex-wife hates him (for abandoning their daughter and for divorcing her after admitting he was gay the whole time), but he is apparently a talented chef and is holding his own on the show. The idea for the cooking show is interesting. It is set in the near future, where certain foods have become so rare that only the super-rich can afford to eat it. This results in the chefs using illegal means to obtain the food, and it is displayed on television for everyone to see.

My only problem is that I don't really like the daughter--she is weirdly clingy towards the dad who left when she was 14.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Volume 2 to see what new challenges are in store on the show, as well as to see what happens with Gavin's ex-wife, daughter, and assistant.

Modern Moves traces the movement of American social dance styles between black and white cultural groups and between immigrant and migrant communities during the early twentieth century. Its central focus is New York City, where the confluence of two key demographic streams - an influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe and the growth of the city's African American community particularly as it centered Harlem - created the conditions of possibility for hybrid dance forms like blues, ragtime, ballroom, and jazz dancing. Author Danielle Robinson illustrates how each of these forms came about as the result of the co-mingling of dance traditions from different cultural and racial backgrounds in the same urban social spaces. The results of these cross-cultural collisions in New York City, as she argues, were far greater than passing dance trends; they in fact laid the foundation for the twentieth century's social dancing practices throughout the United States.

By looking at dance as social practice across conventional genre and race lines, this book demonstrates that modern social dancing, like Western modernity itself, was dependent on the cultural production and labor of African diasporic peoples -- even as they were excluded from its rewards. A cornerstone in Robinson's argument is the changing role of the dance instructor, which was transformed from the proprietor of a small-scale, local dance school at the end of the nineteenth century to a member of a distinct, self-identified social industry at the beginning of the twentieth. Whereas dance studies has been slow to connect early twentieth century dancing with period racial politics, Modern Moves departs radically from prior scholarship on the topic, and in so doing, revises social and African American dance history of this period. Recognizing the rac(ial)ist beginnings of contemporary American social dancing, it offers a window into the ways that dancing throughout the twentieth century has provided a key means through which diverse groups of people have navigated shifting socio-political relations through their bodily movement.

Modern Moves asserts that the social practice of modern dancing, with its perceived black origins, empowered displaced people such as migrants and immigrants to grapple with the effects of industrialization, urbanization, and the rise of North American modernity. Far more than simple appropriation, the selling and practicing of "black" dances during the 1910s and 1920s reinforced whiteness as the ideal racial status in America through embodied and rhetorical engagements with period black stereotypes.

Anthony Trewavas, Emeritus Professor, University of Edinburgh, FRS

Anthony Trewavas obtained his B.Sc and Ph.D from University College, London in Biochemistry and went to do post doctoral research at the University of East Anglia and the University of Edinburgh, where he became Professor of Plant Biochemistry, as well as undertaking numerous visiting professorships abroad. He has published 250 papers and two books, and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and Academia Europea and has been elected as a Life Member of the American Society of Plant Biology.

but are as intelligent and communicative as the more primitive animals

The title is a stopper, and meant to be. The book is extremely sophisticated, detailed and convincing. 100 or even 50 years ago, no one could have made a case for plant intelligence, but dramatic research findings over the last decades have shown that plants--although they lack nervous systems--have exceedingly complex internal communication, mediated by chemicals (plant hormones, ions, etc.). Trewavas provides full details on the chemistry. There is communication even within cells, but what is impressive is the amount of communication and even decision-making that goes on in the whole plant. It has to decide how to grow toward light and away from shade, toward water and nutrients and away from sterile soil, etc. We once thought this was a simple, automatic process, but the reality has turned out to be as chemically and strategically complicated as decision-making in simple invertebrate animals. The real shocker, though, was the discovery several years ago that plants communicate with each other, by releasing chemicals into air and soil. Most of the chatter is about predators: a nibbled leaf signals the root, the root signals neighboring roots, and other trees deploy anti-herbivore defense systems. The new findings show that plants are not about to challenge humans, but are as intelligent and communicative as the more primitive animals. Trewavas gives much detail on these comparison animals. He devotes much attention to defining "behavior" and "intelligence," and showing how broad definitions of these terms cannot exclude plants (or, for that matter, slime molds, hydras, etc.). In short, this is a new way to look at plants. Those who haven't been keeping up on the new work are in for a real surprise. Those who have been talking to their plants for years will feel vindicated (plants don't understand human speech--sorry--but they certainly respond to good care), but, more to the point, they will get a solid dose of serious chemistry and genetics to back them up.
The one problem with this book is that it was apparently not copyedited at all. When I published with OUP, they did meticulous copyediting. They seem to have stopped. There are comma faults on almost every page, misspellings (e.g. Gardener for Gardner on p. 194), and that grossest of errors, using an apostrophe in a plural ("the ideas of the Darwin's--Erasmus and Charles," p. 216). There are poorly structured sentences, and even some sentences I can't decode--apparently printing errors that nobody caught. There is misidentification of Greek as "Latin" (p. 256, etymology). Shame on Oxford UP. This book deserves better.
