About the Author
Dean Radin, Ph.D., is Laboratory Director at the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma, California. He worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories and GTE Laboratories on advanced telecommunications systems, and for nearly two decades he has conducted research on psychic phenomena in academia (Princeton University, University of Edinburgh, University of Nevada), and in three Silicon Valley think tanks (Interval Research Corporation, Boundary Institute, and SRI International). One of the most surprising discoveries of modern physics is that objects aren't as separate as they may seem. When you drill down into the core of even the most solid-looking material, separateness dissolves. All that remains, like the smile of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, are relationships extending curiously throughout space and time. These connections were predicted by quantum theory and were called "spooky action at a distance" by Albert Einstein. One of the founders of quantum theory, Erwin Schrödinger, dubbed this peculiarity entanglement, and said "I would not call that one but rather the characteristic trait of quantum mechanics."
The deeper reality suggested by the existence of entanglement is so unlike the world of everyday experience that until recently, many physicists believed it was interesting only for abstract theoretical reasons. They accepted that the microscopic world of elementary particles could become curiously entangled, but those entangled states were assumed to be fleeting and have no practical consequences for the world as we experience it. That view is rapidly changing.
Scientists are now finding that there are ways in which the effects of microscopic entanglements "scale up" into our macroscopic world. Entangled connections between carefully prepared atomic-sized objects can persist over many miles. There are theoretical descriptions showing how tasks can be accomplished by entangled groups without the members of the group communicating with each other in any conventional way. Some scientists suggest that the remarkable degree of coherence displayed in living systems might depend in some fundamental way on quantum effects like entanglement. Others suggest that conscious awareness is caused or related in some important way to entangled particles in the brain. Some even propose that the entire universe is a single, self-entangled object.
If these speculations are correct, then what would human experience be like in such an interconnected universe? Would we occasionally have numinous feelings of connectedness with loved ones, even at a distance? Would such experiences evoke a feeling of awe that there's more to reality than common sense implies? Could "entangled minds" be involved when you hear the telephone ring and somehow know -- instantly -- who's calling? If we did have such experiences, could they be due to real information that somehow bypassed the usual sensory channels? Or are such reports better understood as coincidences or delusions?
These are the types of questions explored in this book. We'll find that there's substantial experimental evidence for a few types of genuine psi phenomena. And we'll learn why, until very recently, science has largely ignored these interesting effects. For centuries, scientists assumed that everything can be explained by mechanisms analogous to clockworks. Then, to everyone's surprise, over the course of the twentieth century we learned that this commonsense assumption is wrong. When the fabric of reality is examined very closely, nothing resembling clockworks can be found. Instead, reality is woven from strange, "holistic" threads that aren't located precisely in space or time. Tug on a dangling loose end from this fabric of reality, and the whole cloth twitches, instantly, throughout all space and time.
Science is at the very earliest stages of understanding entanglement, and there is much yet to learn. But what we've seen so far provides a new way of thinking about psi. No longer are psi experiences regarded as rare human talents, divine gifts, or "powers" that magically transcend ordinary physical boundaries. Instead, psi becomes an unavoidable consequence of living in an interconnected, entangled physical reality. Psi is reframed from a bizarre anomaly that doesn't fit into the normal world -- and hence is labeled paranormal -- into a natural phenomenon of physics.
The idea of the universe as an interconnected whole is not new; for millennia it's been one of the core assumptions underlying Eastern philosophies. What is new is that Western science is slowly beginning to realize that some elements of that ancient lore might have been correct. Of course, adopting a new ontology is not to be taken lightly. When it comes to serious topics like one's view of reality, it's sensible to adopt the conservative maxim, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." So we're obliged to carefully examine the evidence and see if psi is real or not. If the conclusion is positive, then previous assumptions about the relationship between mind and matter are wrong and we'll need to come up with alternatives.
As we explore the concept of psi as "entangled minds," we'll consider examples of psi experiences in life and lab, we'll take a survey of the origins of psi research, we'll explore the outcomes of thousands of controlled laboratory tests, and we'll debunk some skeptical myths. Then we'll explore the fabric of reality as revealed by modern physics and see why it's becoming increasingly relevant to understanding why and how psi exists. At the end, we'll find that the nineteenth century English poet Francis Thompson may have said it best:

Good Introduction to Scientific Study of Psi

With Rupert Sheldrake's "The Sense of Being Stared At", this is the best book introducing the general reader to the evidence for psi, or anomalous cognition. Psi generally describes any cognitive event which cannot be explained by contemporary materalistic neuroscience. Well-known examples are telepathy and precognition, but Radin's argument is that these phenomena are not really the special provenance of people called "psychics." Instead, they are part of our own everyday functioning, and known to most of us as thinking of someone before they call you on the telephone. Contrary to the arguments of professional skeptics, psi is not pseudoscience, nor does the evidence really allow any rational doubt. These phenomena have been thoroughly proven, over and over again, with statistical significance. They have been replicated by skeptics. At this point, materialism is just blocking scientific progress, because the goal of psi research should be to situate so-called anomalous cognition within a model of mind-brain interaction that removes the "anomalous" from "anomalous cognition." Such a new scientific worldview would not necessarily be theistic, though the failure of materialism should indicate more openness to theistic belief.
Radin refers to minds as "entangled" because of his own suspicion that psi results from what is called "quantum entanglement", where two particles become associated with one another so that even if separated in space, the activity of one directly affects the activity of another. As more evidence has been gathered in, entanglement has been demonstrated to be widespread, rather than rare, and to have implications outside the quantum world. Our neurons may co-operate with quantum physics to produce effects such as psi. Still, this really can't be anything more than a hunch, and I'm not sure Radin's explanation has anything in particular to commend it over other theoretical frameworks (i.e. Sheldrake's "morphic resonance"), though there's no evidence against it, either.
Still, Radin's book is exceedingly valuable because of the way in which it compiles so much psi research in so many different categories and explains it in terms that can be understood by the general reader.

Consider the possibly that classical physics is not only wrong but way wrong.

A wild ride through the data supporting psi. I was for many years a reductionist like Michael Shermer. However, after reading more and books like this, my mind has accepted the reality that we know very little about where we came from and what really drives our human experience.
The quantum field seems to be more and more strange and exciting the more I read. It explains alot of the unknown but leaves more questions in its wake. This book at least addresses the strange and wonderful and considers the possibly that classical physics is not only wrong but way wrong.

Ultimate Proof of Our Interconnectedness

To be frank, I find this book much more interesting than 'The Conscious Universe', but this has to do with the simple fact that I am researching on these matters since two decades already; for me, the basic proof is since long established. However, I am well aware that such is not the case with the lay public, and thus I would recommend 'The Conscious Universe'—which I equally reviewed— to those who are skeptical, or who are so bare of knowledge of psychic phenomena that they need to begin with Adam and Eve.
I shall first make some general remarks about the book, and then focus on Chapter 2 entitled Naked Psi, which deals for the most part with the highly intriguing premonitions of the September 11, 2001 events. Let us first ask, what is entanglement?

Perhaps, as Dean Radin humbly suggests, there is no ready-made answer to this question, but he’s optimistic that over the coming years we’ll come around to see the light on that matter. Now let me get at the core of this review, the precognitive messages and presentments in the foreground of September 11, 2001, which were collected in their thousands, as the author reports, by the Rhine Research Center.
The first case he reports was a couple returning from New York to their home town; the man had tried to sleep in the plane, and had a nightmarish vision to be buried alive in tons of cement that were closing hermetically about him, virtually crushing his bones one by one in this prison of stone that was converging about him. When they returned home, exhausted after the long trip and three thousand miles away from their friends in New York, and went to bed, in New York the two towers of the World Trade Center went down to ashes in an unprecedented catastrophe that was mediatized in its every detail. In the second documented case, a couple had passed the Pentagon on a highway and the woman, in a sudden vision, had seen the Pentagon burning and huge piles of dark smoke rising from it, while her husband had wondered about her screams. In a few seconds the vision had vanished. This had been several weeks before September, 11, 2001.
Dean Radin explains that it is because of the psychological fact of memory repression and a blinding out of perception that so many people do actually not get clear visions; the author seems to be convinced that we do receive clear premonitions and visions in front of catastrophic events that cost many human lives, but that our brain safeguards our mental health by suppressing disturbing impressions and all the anxiety that is of course connected to it.
