About the Author

A Wonderful Intro Into The Afterlife And Those Who Report Back

I LOVED this book. I only wish it had been longer (it's about 100 pages once you subtract the misc. pages that most books have: title pages, index, etc.)

This little book covers 7 mediums (old and some new) and gives brief overviews of what those mediums (and the souls who spoke through them) had to say about what life is like on the other side. This information is taken from books that have already been published so if you're looking for new works this is not the book for you.

What the author does here is unique in that I haven't read another book like it yet. From his extensive reading of books about the afterlife (he is a Professor of Religion) he compiles an overview of what life is like after we die, according to spirits who have spoken through mediums.

The author's goal is to help people form a more realistic view of the afterlife then the ones offered by religions (Christianity in particular with its limited view of either hell with fire and eternal punishment, or heaven with harps and clouds.)

Each chapter focuses on one medium/spirit and gives a brief intro about them. Each chapter gives lots of direct quotes from the spirits about different aspects of the afterlife, like: what different regions (spheres) of the afterlife exist; what people do in the afterlife; what our soul's purpose is; where corrupt, evil-doers go and what "evil" forces really are; and much more.

The last chapter summerizes 44 points about the afterlife (as covered in the book) that seem the most interesting to the author. Some of these points include, randomly (and I quote from the book):

A Travel Guide for Everyone

Professor Stafford Betty, the author, asserts that conventional beliefs regarding life after death are antiquated and that his book is intended to give a more realistic picture of what the "Other Side" is like. He points out that there is no conclusive evidence of what to expect when we die, but the accounts set forth in the book are consistently similar and more easily reconcilable with a just and loving God than the one offered to us by orthodox religion.

Having done much research in this area and having written extensively on the subject, I totally agree with him. Much has come to us through credible mediumship, near-death experiences, and other paranormal phenomena about what to expect after death. Unfortunately, organized religions have rejected this modern revelation because it is not totally consistent with what they have interpreted from their good books and thus it presents a threat to their leadership. At the same time, science has rejected it because it cannot be analyzed in a test tube. In effect, this "modern revelation" is a victim of both religious and scientific fundamentalism.

"Some religions take a dim view of mediums and warn that messages coming to us from the Other Side are from the Devil," Betty states in the Introduction. "Many scientists, on the other hand, tell us not to pay attention to such `messages' because there is no such thing as spirits and life after death. Other people take a middle path, including some of the world's best scientists. They bring a critical but open mind to the topic. That is the attitude I take and encourage you to take."

There is something about the word "medium" or "mediumship" that triggers both suspicion and antagonism in many people today, but anyone who has spent time studying the subject, as both the author and I have done, comes to understand that there are genuine mediums who are able to serve as intermediaries between this world and the next and give some indication as to what the afterlife is like. In those "good books" they were called seers and prophets, but the messages came through in the same way. Contrary to fundamentalists' interpretations, revelation did not end some 2,000 years ago.

Betty explains that this book is not about the type of evidential communication we see on television these days. Rather, it is about what has been termed "spiraling mediumship" - wisdom and higher truths believed to be communicated by spirits with a mission to do more than provide evidence of the existence of the afterlife. "They reveal an astral world of amazing beauty and stepped-up intensity of thought and emotion," he writes, adding that they offer "an overall plan that explains not only the spirits' purpose over there but ours right here; and a mysterious grandeur that surpasses the ability of our language to describe it adequately."

Many spirit communicators are quoted. "As the soul lives in the earth-life, so does it go to spirit-life," the author quotes one advanced spirit. "Its tastes, its predilections, its habits, its antipathies, they are with it still. It is not changed save in the accident of being freed from the body. The soul that on earth has been low in taste and impure in habit does not change its nature by passing from the earth-sphere, any more than the soul that has been truthful, pure, and progressive becomes base and bad by death."

Another spirit communicated: "You should get away from the mental habit of regarding your present life as the only one, get rid of the idea that the life you expect lead on this side, after your death, is to be an endless existence in one state. You could no more endure such an endless existence in the subtle matter than you could endure to live forever in the gross matter in which you are now encased. You would weary of it. You could not support it."

Still another spirit had this to say: "This is a wonderful, thrilling experience. When I caught but a glimpse of Light on earth, and it uplifted and changed me, and changed also the direction of my life, that impermanent glimpse was as nothing to the immersion of Light that is possible here. I appear to lie in my garden, yet in the power of this Light, my mind and spirit stretch out into a glorious extension."

Clearly, Dr. Betty is not your stereotypical religion professor. Unlike most professors, he dares to discuss life after death in his classes. "The subject seems to be surrounded by an aura of disrepute," he writes in the Afterword of the book. "We can talk about God, we can talk about ethics all day long, but the one subject that should most concern us - because everything else ultimately rests on it - is off limits among the smarter set where I work. I get the sense that faith in life after death is OK, but just don't talk about it, don't admit it. It's unsavory! Why is this?"

Betty says he thinks he has the answer. "Among people who like to think of themselves as smart and well informed, such as you find among professors at a secular university, the materialist assumptions of the physical sciences color almost everything else," he explains. "And since an afterlife is immaterial, at least in the way science understands matter, my colleagues are reluctant to admit they believe in it even if they do. Among them are two Catholics in the biology department, and one is a long-time friend. He deflects every attempt by prying students to learn if he is a man of faith, and in fact he implies that he is not. This is a man who loves his religion; but he is afraid to admit it. He doesn't want to look like a fool. He doesn't want to appear disreputable."

When one is planning a trip to another country, it is prudent and wise to find out, in advance, as much about that country and its people as possible. The same may be said for the after-death "trip." Indications are that we are able to adjust and settle in much more easily if we know what to expect. In that sense, this book is an outstanding travel guide to the most important trip any of us will ever take.

Excellent Book!

Stafford Betty did an excellent job!All material he used in this book is very well documented,author presents only facts(mediumistic reports) - nothing more.Of course,one may have mixed feelings about validity and accuracy of such reports(as myself do),but it is data anyway,and it is up to user to decide how to regard it.Stafford also did a very nice summary at the end of his book,nicely putting common elements in mediumistic reports,and thus producing coherent picture.Highly reccomended!

A BRIEF “POPULAR-LEVEL” PRESENTATION DEFENSE OF THE KJV, AND REJECTION OF MODERN TRANSLATIONS

Author Barry Burton wrote in the Introduction to this 1983 book, “The issue of the modern translations is controversial, even in fundamental circles. The issue is NOT one of inspiration, of course. We believe in the inspiration of the Scripture… The issue is one of preservation. Did God Preserve His Word perfect for us today, or was it only perfect ‘in the original autographs’? If God has not preserved His Word perfect, but has allowed some errors, then, since we don’t have the ‘original autographs,’ we must assume that we have been teaching and preaching out of a book that is not completely reliable. If we believe that the Bible is still perfect, then we must still answer the question, ‘WHICH Bible is the one that God has preserved for us?’ Since the modern translations are different from the King James Bible, not just in wording but in doctrine, and since two conflicting books cannot BOTH be perfect, we must make a choice. We believe that the Bible (KJV) is the Word of God, and we also believe that God has preserved it perfect for us today.”

He quotes the Good News Bible’s translation of Isaiah 7:145 as “young woman” rather than “virgin,” and says, “When you deny the virgin birth of Christ… you are saying that Christ was an illegitimate child, since Mary was not married when He was conceived… you are saying that Mary was a fornicator.. you are calling God a LIAR in Matthew 1:22-23… you are saying that Christ was a sinner, because he would have had to have a physical father.” (Pg. 38)

He cites the Living Bible’s paraphrase of 1 Sam 20:30 [using “SOB”], “God’s Word doesn’t use dirty slang! Is that what you want your children to read? Don’t use the flimsy excuse that it is an ‘adult’ Bible. No one should read filthy language!” (Pg. 43) [It should be noted that the “SOB” reference in the LB’s FOOTNOTE, not the translation itself.] Further quoting the Living Bible’s paraphrase of Zech 13:6 [“‘I got into a brawl at the home of a friend!”], and noting that Jesus said in Mk 14:27 that this was a prophecy of him, he comments, “Did Christ get into a drunken brawl? This is blasphemy folks!!!” (Pg. 45)

He asserts, “The Vaticanus and Siniaticus manuscripts are the oldest, but… they are NOT the best manuscripts!!!!! That’s where the modern translators went wrong!!! They foolishly accepted the Vaticanus and Siniaticus simply because they were old. They did not attempt to find out WHY they were so vastly different from the Greek text that real Christians have KNOWN to be the infallible Word of God… Don’t fall for the ‘oldest are the best’ line! The oldest are NOT the best! FOR EXAMPLE: The Vaticanus and Siniaticus both leave out the last 12 verses of Mark, concerning the resurrection of Christ. BUT… there is not one other manuscript, either uncial or cursive that leave out this passage.” (Pg. 62)

After noting that all modern translations are copyrighted, he comments, “Is the King James Bible copyrighted???? NO!!! WHY???? You cannot copyright God’s Word!!! You can only copyright man’s words!!!” (Pg. 79) [Of course, the KJV was published before copyright law existed.]

On the “plus” side, this is a forcefully-argued statement (complete with “cartoon” illustrations by publisher Jack Chick), that will appeal to many “KJV Only” Christians. On the “negative” side, it is hardly a “scholarly” presentation, and readers seeking much more in-depth treatments might consult David Otis Fuller’s Which Bible?, Counterfeit or Genuine?, and True or False?, as well as Peter Ruckman’s The Christian's Handbook of Manuscript Evidence, or Benjamin Wilkinson’s Our Authorized Bible: Vindicated. Or those wanting the “other side” can read James White’s The King James Only Controversy: Can You Trust Modern Translations?.

Changed my life

As a young believer in Christ I saw the promises of God regarding not only the inspiration but also the
PRESERVATION of the written words of God, called scripture in 2 Timothy 3:16. I knew that what God had
inspired, that also He must have kept. Yet, when I looked in the 'modern versions' I found statements like 'the most reliable manuscripts omit
this verse'.
Mark chapter 16:9-20 troubled me. Did Jesus say '..Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature...' or not? In fact what did God say and what didn't He say? Are all the written words of God preserved perfectly within
the pages of any one book?
Barry Burton's book answered these questions clearly for me and the Lord revealed the Authority of His BOOK so that my foundation in the Christian life could be built on the power of God rather than the wisdom of men.

I recommend Let's Weigh The Evidence to every born-again believer who is looking for final authority.

Graham C. Boettcher is the William Cary Hulsey Curator of American Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art, where he oversees the collections of American fine and decorative art before 1945. Elle Shushan is among the world's foremost dealers in American and European portrait miniatures, and works with many of the leading private and public collections of miniatures. Jo Manning is a romance novelist and the author of 'My Lady Scandalous' (Simon & Schuster, 2005), a biographical account of the royal courtesan Grace Dalrymple Elliot.

Beautiful book
By always shopping
As a collector of antique eye miniatures, I was so excited to finally have a reference book on them! The book is stunning and as informative as one might hope for such rare pieces of artwork. I don't really get why the chapter on fictional stories about specific pieces was added, other than to give non-antique collectors some historical perspective around lives during the relevant time period, but other than that one chapter, I really love the book and will use it in the future as a reference. I only wish I could get to the museum to see the exhibit which this book catalogs. This is a must have for collectors of eye miniatures, portrait miniatures and portrait jewelry of late 18th through the early 19th century.

I have been fascinated by the lovers' eye brooches ever since I learned about them. I'd love to have the means neccessary to collect them. They are so rare that I don't even have one. So instead I look at the beautiful pictures of this one collection of many often spectacular examples of this interesting and exotic jewelry. This book contains photos of this one extensive collection which features examples of all forms of this type of jewelry. I judged this book the way I judge all books on collections by the number and quality of the photos. This book contains many gorgeous and clear photos cataloguing this one collection of lovers' eye jewelry.

About the Author
Dr Greenwood is presently Philip Sporn Professor of Engineering at Rensselaer, the oldest engineering school in North America. His professional career, which started with a B.T.-H. apprenticeship in 1940, has been spent about equally in industry and university environments. His particular interests are in power switching equipment and the interactions of such equipment with power systems. He was one of the small team that developed the first high power vacuum interrupters for the General Electric Co. (USA) in the 1950s and has been involved with this technology ever since. He holds many patents and has published widely on this subject. He is the author of Electrical transients in power systems (John Wiley & Sons, 2nd edn, 1991). Dr Greenwood is a life Fellow of the IEEE, an Attwood Associate of CIGRE and a former Visiting Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge.

My review based on studying from this book

I studied from this textbook for my course and wrote exams based on it. This was the first time I was learning a Law based subject. The cases provided brought the theory and application to the forefront and made it easy to relate theory to practice. The first few chapters were very good in helping the reader understand the architecture of the US Courts of Justice, etc, and which courts have what kind of jurisdiction.

This is one book that would be good to keep if one can afford the price. The pages are smooth and text is easy to read.

It's a lot to cover, but this book does it well

This textbook covers a lot of material. I have no basis for comparison but I felt the book did a great job of explaining things without much fluff. The cases included were relevant to the chapter and trimmed down to highlight the information that was really pertinent.

The spine of the book is coming off within the first month. Pretty disappointed to pay over $100 for a book that is already coming apart.
