RUDOLPH SZILARD, Dr.-ING., P.E., is Emeritus Professor of Structural Mechanics at the University of Hawaii, and retired chairman of the Structural Mechanics Department at the University of Dortmund, Germany. His long and illustrious career in both academia and in the professional practice of engineering includes serving as a senior structural engineer with the noted firm of Ammann and Whitney, as well as authoring numerous scientific papers and eight books on structural mechanics. Dr. Szilard was the recipient of a "Senior Fellowship Award" by the A. von Humboldt Foundation, Germany.

Author has collected a significant array of various plate problems and presented them in one literature which is surely a very commnedable effort.

Engineers and Scientists working in the area of various plate problems would find this literature of immense help, wherein they will not have to rummage through various publications to find out typical solution to the problem he is looking for.

However it is felt that some of the basic derivations( specially the classical part) are a bit too brief and further elaboration could have benefitted specially those, who are new to the topic and not so comfortable with fourth order differential equations related to the plate.

An elaboration( even a brief one) on Dynamic response of plates on elastic foundations and some of the work carried out in this area by Thomson and Kobori, G.Warburton to name a few would have made the book more complete.

Over all a very good monograph as a quick reference to plate problems for both practicing engineers and researchers.

Excellent Text & Reference Book

A most comprehensive book (text and reference) dealing with all aspects of plate analysis that can be used to solve practical plate problems in civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, aerospace, marine and mining engineering. Easy to read with many easy to follow examples. Math knowledge is relatively modest, only a familiarity with algebra, calculus & matrix operations is required. Every solution and technique presented is critically evaluated for efficiency and accuracy and compared to other methods. The handy accompanying CD has 170 plate formulas and a finite element model for static and dynamic analysis of moderately large plate problems. This is a must for your reference library. Take advantage of Dr Szilard's vast knowledge and wonderful writing style. This book should be considered for using as a primary text for college engineering classes.

This is one of the best-written engineering textbooks I have read as an engineering student. Writing is as easy-to-read without being too casual and covers just enough of the technical information. Examples are relevant to the text.

If it were my choice, I would not teach from this book.

I was the teaching assistant for an introductory Power Systems class last semester that used this book, and I would not recommend it. For starters, this book lays a poor foundation of the basic concepts of three-phase power and complex power. In addition, some sections of the book are VERY confusing, even as some one who already has a degree in the material. Example problems are weak, and the problem solving in the solutions manual (which can be viewed with a quick search of the web) is not straightforward, often employing "cookbook" problem solving methods. The biggest deficiency of this book is it's weak explanation of magnetic circuits.

For electric machines (and magnetic circuit theory), I suggest Electric Machinery by Fitzgerald. For power systems analysis (which this book didn't really go into), I liked Power Systems Analysis and Design by Glover, whose cover Chapman seems to have ripped off. I prefer my old class notes' explanation of the fundamentals of complex power and three-phase power better than either of these, but they are both better than Chapman.

an ok book

So far the book has been ok in my machines and power fundamentals course, mostly though because my instructor is completely useless in this field. Some things I have seen before and the book offers a more thorough explanation of concepts although the approach in the problems is not usually the one most easily seen by me. That being said, I do praise the book for its numerous examples and detail. The Matlab examples don't really make use of its abilities but they're still helpful.

Easy Read, but is just an Overview Text

Was required for a Cyber Crimes class that I took through UC. It is a pretty easy read and relatively short in length. Since the field is so new there is a limited amount of compiled data out there that is available. Gives a good overview of Computer Criminology, but doesn't go in-depth with any individual issues. You will need to track down peer-reviewed studies to get that level of detail on anything that has been researched to data.

Distracting

Using this book for a Cyber Terrorism class in college. I had a hard time getting through the book since every sentence seemed to have quotes around one word which became very distracting. Reminded me of the SNL "Air Quote" skit which was entertaining at first but then became very annoying. It would define a word, such as hacking or hacker, and then when using the word again, the author put quotes around it making it seem like it was an unnecessary word.

It is about good, old and infamous Project Management

Agile Project Management with Kanban by Eric Brechner is very different from the last two books about Kanban I have had an opportunity to read recently (Kanban in Action and Kanban from the Inside). It is about good, old and infamous Project Management, something, what many Agile or Lean orthodox people call bad and dead. It briefly presents precise and actionable ways how to apply Kanban as a tool for organizations of different kind and size. Despite being written by a guy who worked for a huge product development organization (Xbox/Microsoft), the book manages to escape insanely popular trend of telling how to scale Kanban, just as consulting business suggests to scale Scrum or Agile. Instead it meets the reality of any software or product development teams, which do not work independently. It comes with an open letter to upper management, which needs to support evolution toward Kanban, as well as with questions and more important answers you may need to convince your peers, working with Waterfall or Scrum in the past.

You won't find here too many details about theories behind Lean and Kanban, but just enough to know where to look for it and why things work better this way. The author, moreover, offers ready-to-use Excel sheets, to calculate just a few, but super important numbers and metrics for your team, so you can track some KPIs and improve based on real data, not just your gut feeling. In the end there’s a big chance your gut feelings will be consistent with data trends, and Kanban will guide you to better predictability, less waste and rework, more evenness and joy of work.

Very concise! Highly recommended!

We had a supposed (certified) scrum master where I worked last but being my first experience with it, I was shocked how unproductive our processes were. After learning what scrum was supposed to be like, I realized how saying you practice scrum and doing scrum are two different things. Our bug tracking software (Fogbugz) included a Kanban board which got me interested in researching the subject which ultimately led to this wonderful book. After reading it, I have to admit I think this is going to be better than scrum. Can't wait to try it out. This book is highly recommended!

I love this book

I love this book, and I _love_ using Kanban. I use it at work, and my family uses it at home to track schoolwork, chores, and even some house projects. It made a huge difference for tracking schoolwork. I evangelize Kanban to friends and coworkers, and when I do, I point them to this book as a starting point. Simply put, Kanban works better than anything else I have tried - it strips away the unneeded stuff and focuses you on what you need to be doing with very minimal overhead. It is very flexible so you can adjust it for your needs once you master the basics, even to the point to adapting to the space you have available for you Kanban board.

Full disclosure: I work on one of the teams Eric referenced in this book. The picture of our Kanban board in the book was very early on when our team was still learning to use the full power of Kanban. We've improved on that early board a bit by optimizing it for our team over the 4+ years we've been using it, but even in the "early learning stages" Kanban worked better than anything else we'd ever tried. Like anything else, the longer you do use a tool, the better you get at using it, and our team is no exception.

About the Author
Robert Huzij is Coordinator of the Heavy Equipment Technician and Apprenticeship programs at Cambrian College in Sudbury Ontario. He serves on Ontario's Heavy Equipment Advisory Board and Motive Power Provincial Advisory Committees, Chairs the Skills Ontario Heavy Equipment Technical Skills Competition, and has developed curricula for technician training, documentation, and testing. Prior to teaching, Mr. Huzij worked in private industry for more than 30 years overseeing apprentices and running an equipment remanufacturing shop.

Angelo Spano is Coordinator of the Truck and Coach Technician Apprenticeship program at Centennial College in Toronto. His deep background in heavy equipment drivetrain, steering, suspension, and track systems includes credentials as a Program Certified Heavy Equipment Technician and dual certified adult educator. Mr. Spano is also a member of the Ontario Heavy Equipment Technical Skills Competition and Skills Canada National Technical Committee for Heavy Equipment and Truck competitions.

Sean Bennett is a former program coordinator for the Truck and Diesel Department at Centennial College, as well as a former corporate trainer for Mack Trucks. During a 20-year tenure at the college he authored new curricula, helped overhaul existing course offerings, and chaired a wide range of curriculum development committees for the Province of Ontario. Bennett has written more than 30 books dealing with diesel, truck, heavy equipment, and automotive technology and currently devotes his career to technical writing and speaking engagements. He is an active member of the American Trucking Association's Technology and Maintenance Council, the Association of Diesel Specialists, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the North American Council of Automotive Teachers. He is widely regarded as the foremost author in medium/heavy duty truck technology.

About the Author
Zvi Bodie is Professor of Finance and Economics at the Boston University School of Management. He is the director of Boston University’s Chartered Financial Analysts Examination Review Program and has served as consultant to many private and governmental organizations. Professor Bodie is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he was director of the NBER Project on Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System, and he is a member of the Pension Research Council of The Wharton School. He is widely published in leading professional journals, and his previous books include Pensions in the U.S. Economy, Issues in Pension Economics, and Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System.

Alex Kane is professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He was visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and the pricing of options. Professor Kane is the developer of the International Simulation Laboratory (ISL) for training and experimental research in executive decision making.

Alan Marcus is professor of finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. He received his PHD in Economics from MIT in 1981. Professor Marcus recently has been a visiting professor at the Athens Laboratory of Business Administration and at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and has served as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He also established the Chartered Financial Analysts Review Program at Boston College. Professor Marcus has published widely in the fields of capital markets and portfolio management, with an emphasis on applications of futures and options pricing models. His consulting work has ranged from new product development to provision of expert testimony in utility rate proceedings. He also spend two years at the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), where he developed models of mortgage pricing and credit risk, and he currently serves on the Advisory Council for the Currency Risk Management Alliance of State Street Bank and Windham Capital Management Boston.

THE Text for Investment Analysis!

I have several Finance texts and this is one of a few that I still reference after several years (in addition to Principles of Corp Finance - Brealey & Meyers). I would consider this an intermediate to advanced level text. If this is your first text on investments, you will likely find yourself re-reading paragraphs and working through calculations. I would not recommend this text to someone who is looking to learn how to buy investments or just re-balance their portfolio. But if you want a solid understanding of the theory behind investment products - this is the text. I have other read other investment books and found that I would end up referencing this text for certain concepts, which were explained much more clearly to me.

this (9th ed) is good investment. Buy the latest edition(10th) if you can ...

The older editions (less than 9th ) are worthless to buy. But, this (9th ed) is good investment. Buy the latest edition(10th) if you can afford.However, the stuff in 9th ed is almost same as 10th ed. This book contains recent updates of the market laws , regulations etc so try to buy the recent book if preparing for CFA or seeking jobs.The book came with fairly good condition.
I thought of buying the international edition (latest) but It would have taken longer time to reach.Also, international editions are paperback and it is difficult to read/study from it, especially the pages on the left.So, I preferred a hard cover (penultimate ed.). The book has to be followed many times/carried in bags and so it is good to have a hardcover copy.

There are two hardcover versions of this edition available online. The other version has a slightly different cover, and is over $100.

I had to get the 10th edition of this text for my investment analysis class, and I'm so glad I found this version because it's the exact same. Though the chapters are in a different order.

Though we all seek happiness, usually it's a side effect of having what we want, whether that's a family, a house, a good job, friends or money. But according to holistic well-being expert and one-man media empire Chopra (The Ten Commitments, The Seven Spiritual Laws), all of those reasons come and go like a passing breeze. Citing the wisdom of Vedanta, one of the world's oldest philosophies, Chopra demonstrates how happiness for a reason is just another form of misery-as that reason can be taken away from us at any time. Chopra offers no quick fixes for this inner journey to happiness for its own sake-"the key to lasting happiness is to identify with the unchanging essence of your inner self, your source"-but does offer provocative questions along the path: "How can I live with effortless ease?," "When will I be fully awake?," "What is grace and how do I live in it?" The wordy chapters can be hard to get through, and some passages may require multiple readings to fully digest ("Thought, at a primordial level, is an impulse of energy and information, and it comes from the field of pure consciousness"). Still, millions of devotees will find this title, extending the philosophies laid out in his other books, audio and video programs, of great interest. For neophytes, though, Chopra's panoply of ideas may be too hard to grasp and his goals too lofty for practical self-help.

Profound, practical and enduring wisdom

POWER, FREEDOM and GRACE is a fascinating, must-read book for anyone who is a fan of Deepak Chopra, and if you are not already a fan, you are sure to become one after reading this book. Every chapter starts out with a question, and the questions are ones we all want to answer at some point in our lives. "What do I want?, Who am I?, How do I participate in creating my reality?" Not only will you find the answers to these questions, but you will also acquire a whole new perspective of your reality and the world as you know it.

In Chopra's words, "Our real essence is a field of consciousness that is powerful, unbounded and free." Sounds good, but how does it work? With the findings of modern science and Chopra's extraordinary knowledge in the field of mind-body medicine, he expertly guides you on a journey of discovery of how we come into existence, create our reality, and are not separate from anything, but a part of all that is.

Chopra has left me with little doubt that we can all transform by "getting in touch with our inner self, the source of all being." And by transforming, what awaits me is "knowing true happiness, the intoxication of love, spirit flowing in its pure essence -- unimpeded, unrestricted, full of mystery, magic, and adventure."

This book is an adventure in itself and one that I will read over and over again. If you are going to buy a copy, you won't want to part with it.

Graceful

Humans suffer because we do not know who we are. We over rely on our senses thus the superstition of materialism as Deepak calls it that is, the lure of happiness from things and circumstance rather than from within. We are one with all life; the essence, One, Spirit, never changes. This book can help one burst through the delusions that grip our lives, the habits that lock us into ignoring cause and effect (such as human impact on climate,) and ignoring the miracle of life that surrounds us; we need to get back in synch with our essence. Spend time in nature to find the rhythm of life that flows like the water through all; feel the connection.

I love the quotes and confidence with which Deepak writes he knows this is true and then we do by reading it and knowing from the knowing that is wordless; we are just forgetting the truth because we are sleepwalking or allowing the message machine to delude us further.

Stay in the moment; breathe out and in; "to be whole is to live in grace." Gratefully and Gracefully.

the wealth of information he has taught over the years. This book is an

Risky Business-- Straight talk about a touchy topic

As a parent of a college student, I think ALL parents should get this book for their guys and girls. It's a MUST read for them now, and would've been great to have in those earlier H.S. years as well. This book makes it clear exactly when, how, and why people who are not promiscuous are catching STDs. This is NOT a boring textbook lecture on STDs, it reads like a story, featuring smart, educated young people who look, act and talk like your teen (or 20 or 30-something). What our kids consider "low risk" activities (you may or may not know what those are) actually still transmit diseases - with or without sex (who knew?) and with or without condoms! Whether you think your son/daughter is sexually active now or will be anytime soon, even and perhaps especially if it's with their future spouse, Seductive Delusions is a MUST HAVE so that you and they know what his/her real risks are! YIKES! P.S> I'm now buying copies for my single, adult friends too (it's a jungle out there)

Whether you are a teenager contemplating a relationship, or re-entering the dating scene, you will find this book informative and helpful. Read it cover-to-cover, or use it as a reference. It is clear, accurate, up-to-date, and thorough. It gives you the information you need without boring statistics or off-putting lectures. The real-life stories draw you in. I have bought this book for relatives in high school and middle school as well as those who are re-entering the dating world. Dr. Grimes tackles the "unmentionables" with grace and tact. I wish each of my patients had this information before they started a new relationship.

A very sobering book

Sexually transmitted diseases (or STDs for short) are a nearly taboo subject in modern American culture, which is very strange considering how sexually-liberated it is. In this very educational book, Dr. Jill Grimes, experienced family physician, uses the medium of story telling to drive home the risks and realities of unprotected sexual activity. She covers seven STDs in this book: herpes, human papilloma virus, cervical cancer, chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, pubic lice, HIV, hepatitis C, and Syphilis. Each of the STDs is covered in two stories (one in the case of cervical cancer), explaining about the disease through a conversation between a man and a woman and their doctors. After that is a fact sheet and FAQ on the disease.

This is a very sobering book, one that addresses a subject that we would rather not talk about, but really must. I think that it is extremely informative, and really should be read by just about everyone. Don't wait to get the sad news from your doctor, be proactive and read this book!
