Well-known psychologist and author Houston begins this highly adventurous book with a poetic retelling of the Egyptian myth of nature goddess Isis and her brother and husband, Osiris, the legendary ruler and god of the underworld. She then chronicles the cult of worship of Isis and Osiris, a chief religion of the Roman Empire until around A.D. 400. Mining archetypal spirituality in the manner of Joseph Campbell, Houston sifts ancient Egyptian myths for their contemporary relevance as keys to personal transformation. Finding love amid sorrow, accepting loss and death, reconciling body and soul are among the lessons she gleans from the Isis/Osiris legend, to be achieved by "entering an Egyptian state of mind, allowing for the simultaneous existence and experience of all things in motion." To that end, she sets forth self-help exercises, including journal-keeping, dreamwork, creating sentences in hieroglyphics, body movement, meditation and sailing with Osiris into the underworld.

Houston, a philosopher, psychologist, and author of Godseed: The Journey of Christ (LJ 4/1/92), invites reader participation in a sacred journey of the mind linking the trials of the modern world with the tribulations faced by gods and goddesses in Egyptian mythology. Houston retells the ancient story of Isis and Osiris, twins borne by the heavenly goddess, Nut. In interpreting hieroglyphic thought patterns, Houston draws numerous parallels between Egyptian myths and Old and New Testament stories. Participation in the myth journey is outlined in 14 steps that "coincide with 14 scattered parts of the broken body of Osiris and are symbolic of the process an individual goes through in reclaiming and reuniting the broken, scattered parts of a lifetime." The anticipated discovery is "that their stories are our stories" and as we understand how they dealt with their lives, we gain insight into ours. Recommended for religion collections.

allright book...

I know alot of the myth in the book isn't proven to be true as of now, with all my reading. But it is a very nice story. It is just kind of all over the place, and seperated with exersizes, like a school book or something. I thought the myth was wonderful, it gave such detail and all of Osirus and Isis, and the other Gods and Goddess involved. The book includes some information about Horus, Seth, Nephthys, Ra, Geb, and some others. It's a pretty nice book. I dont care for the exersizes, I just wanted to read and learn more about the myth, some of it in here is exagerated, but other than that it's nice.

Amazing!- most truthful account of "Free Energy" and proof of Exotic Tech you will read. Must Read!

Amazing science aside- this book should be required class for anyone getting an MBA or thinking of raising cash for a start up. David's 50 years of experience from the White House down to his basic garage-inventor start-up, really charts out how and why disruptive technology rarely makes it to market. You always imagine it's a black van with a strike team of NSA agents that keep these solutions from rolling out but he's right, 90% of the time it's the inventor and his complete lack of strategy or business know how. Been there, done that. Every inventor should read this book before presenting their invention or idea to ANYONE...the book literally lists off everything that Nikola Tesla did wrong and could have avoided. It's a breath of fresh air to read an account so candid about about Mr. Yurth's own misadventures - it reads like a Greek tragedy. The devil is in the details and you can tell he isn't holding anything back. Yurth is a genius, this guy and his uber science team, are cracking Co2 and Methane apart and he has the paperwork to prove it. I've read it twice because the science is a bit over my education level but the comparisons to the US War in Vietnam to what it's like to try to raise money and run a start-up really hit home. Reminds me of every episode of Silicon Valley on HBO. I wish I'd read this in high school.

If you're a researcher, consulting this useful reference is like having an experienced, heavily-armed warrior escort you through jungles and mine fields to find The Truth on the other side.

About the Author

Louis Mendola is one of Sicily’s foremost medievalists, and one of the very few whose work is known beyond Italian borders. His first scholarly paper (on the Battle of Benevento of 1266) was published in 1985; others consider such topics as the history of the medieval Normans in Sicily. He wrote the first book covering the entire seven-century history of the Kingdom of Sicily, and the first English translations of two chronicles of the thirteenth century. Having researched in Italy, Britain, Spain, Germany, France and the Vatican, he has been consulted by The History Channel, the BBC and The New York Times. is a great place to begin researching your Sicilian/Italian ancestry

This is an informative book for those interested in Sicilian history and genealogy. If you're looking for a step by step guide to beginning an on-line genealogy search then this isn't really the book for you, but if you're on your way and are looking for some background to what you're finding, then this book is very helpful and enlightening. If you are lucky enough to have ancestors from the Diocese of Monreale (provincia di Palermo) then you'll be able to get back to the mid to early 16th century, and I am one of those people. Hopefully every diocese in Italy will one day have their parish records digitized. Familysearch.org, the Mormon site, is a great place to begin researching your Sicilian/Italian ancestry. Just remember that the records you'll find are in Latin, not Italian, so if you're not familiar with the Italian form of given names you'll end up with the wrong names of your family, and there are some names which have/had forms popular in Sicilia which you don't find much in other parts of Italia...Geronimo/Geronima for example. Looking at parish censuses will give you the Italian forms of the names, so that's a great place to double check, but they are only available for select years. You can do a lot of work from your computer, so don't get frustrated.

Mandatory reading for all Sicilian Genealogy matters!

Let me start off by saying this book is one of the most valuable tools for researching Sicilian genealogy. I had started my research well over three years ago, and had I had this book, it would have saved me much time!, at least two years! If you are expecting " and they lived happily ever after" or " let me look up my family name and see the history" this is not for you. The author painstakingly lists ever nuance in the field of genealogy, in particular Sicily which has its own set of rules. The books explains the history, human migration, even DNA! As an American doing research on my family tree ( first generation American ) it was very difficult to start, and by pure luck I was able to find someone who helped me along my journey. I had spend countless days asking questions, visiting town halls, getting frustrated, visiting many churches, even having my parents help with no positive results. If I had this book, I would have been able to direct my resources ( time for me ) to right people. As a resident of the United States, I do not have the luxury of time in Sicily. This book is a fantastic reference and guide, and will explain even the confusing subject of heraldry in Sicily. Also interesting is the history of the Knights in Sicily. This book is mandatory if you have family or at least part of your family who originates from Sicily; moreover, this is written by someone who LIVES in Sicily and not someone who visits for a few months and retreats back to UK.

An excellent read!

As someone else previously mentioned this book is not a step-by-step guide to researching genealogical records. It is not an introduction for the novice. It is, however, chock full of valuable information for genealogists, both amateur and professional. It will tell you what kind of information you can expect to glean from the various types of records available, whether they be vital civil records, parish records, census records (riveli), notary records, or feudal records.

The author is a native Sicilian, one of Sicily's leading genealogists, and the islands best-selling historian. His knowledge of the subject is unparalleled and his mastery of the English language is without question. If you have a workable understanding of English you will find this work to be an entertaining, informative and enjoyable read.

This book, along with the companion "The Peoples of Sicily: A Multicultural Legacy" is a must-read for anyone with more than just a cursory interest in the history and genealogy of Sicily and it's peoples.

About the Author
Joan L. Brown is Elias Ahuja Chair of Spanish at the University of Delaware. She teaches at the intermediate through graduate levels with courses on Spanish conversation, Hispanic literature by women, and contemporary Spanish literature and culture. Professor Brown's research interests include second-language acquisition, literary canon formation, and the contemporary Spanish novel.

Carmen Martin Gaite is one of the most honored writers of contemporary Spain and the only author who has won Spain's National Prize for Literature twice. Her best-known novel is the fantastic memoir El cuarto de atr�s (The Back Room). She earned a doctorate in language and literature from the University of Madrid and has published award-winning nonfiction. She has also authored stories, poems, plays, screenplays, and mini-dramas for learning Spanish, which she named conversaciones creadoras.

Most Practical Conversational Vocabulary Textbook Ever

I rented this textbook for a college level Spanish course, but then decided to purchase my own copy to have on hand. I know, I'm kind of a nerd for this kind of thing… This textbook has a wealth of useful, everyday vocabulary, unlike some other curriculums. You will actually use the things you learn in this book when speaking Spanish in any conversational setting. I bought a used copy, as it's just for personal use, and it was a fantastic price, in the ballpark of $17. The only reason I was hesitant to give it five stars is that when I ordered the used copy, it was supposed to be in good condition, and it was written in on almost every activity page. Even with that, it was an unbelievable price for such a huge amount of helpful information and practice. As a book in general, it deserves more than five stars. If you don't mind your book being a little less than perfect in appearance, buy used. It is well worth it.

Mastering Spanish Conversation

Mastering Spanish Conversation is the subtitle of this book. While it has been a decent accompaniment for my Conversational Spanish class, it doesn't have the ability to help you master spanish conversation. Even though it claims such a feat, you will certainly have to do a lot more work than the examples in this book to achieve goals of fluency.

The above explanation is my only problem with this book. Other than that, it provides a vast amount of vocabulary. It also goes over basic grammar, in case you need a reminder. The readings are very helpful and start out very simple to progress to more difficult passages later on. Over all, I am happy with my professor's choice of this text and think that it will help me out a lot when it comes to reading/writing spanish.

This was a required textbook for a spanish conversation course I took in college. It was very helpful, the chapters were short but allowed for much discussion (which is great in a conversation class).

About the Author
Jack Snowman is Professor Emeritus of Educational Psychology at Southern Illinois University. He earned his Ph.D. in educational psychology at Indiana University in 1975. His research is in the area of cognitive and learning strategies. His recent publications include "Learning Tactics and Strategies" in COGNITIVE CLASSROOM LEARNING (Academic Press, 1986) and "Explorations in Mnemonic Training" in IMAGERY AND RELATED MNEMONIC PROCESSING (Springer-Verlag, 1987).

Rick McCown is Professor in the School of Education at Duquesne University, PA. He earned his Ph.D. at Indiana University in 1980. He is active in the Educational Psychology community, including leading presentations at the American Educational Research Association conference. A colleague of Jack Snowman for 25 years, Dr. McCown shares Snowman's views about the role of educational psychology in teacher education. He is an accomplished writer, with published papers (one of which was co-authored with Snowman), journal articles, and book chapters.

Kimberlee Roth is a health writer and journalist. She has written about Borderline Personality Disorder and topics related to physical and emotional well being for numerous newspapers and magazines, including the Chicago Tribune.

Freda Friedman, Ph.D., LCSW, is in private practice and a member of the Phoenix Institute in Chicago, Illinois. For the past twenty years, her primary clinical focus has been with Borderline Personality Disorder, providing treatment, education, support and consultation to people suffering from the disorder, their families and health care professionals working with them. She is on the board of several professional health care organizations and has developed BPD programs in New York and Chicago.

This book helped me realize I'm not so broken afterall...

I wish I'd found this book sooner! I started seeing a therapist because I knew something was wrong with me, I just couldn't figure out what it was. She suggested that my mother might have BPD and that I do a little research on the subject. I found this book and read the first half in one night. I read a few pages, cried, read a few more pages, cried some more. Apparently everything "wrong" with me is a completely normal reaction to being raised by a mother with BPD. I'm still sorting through all the pain, guilt and trauma of spending the last 35 years convinced that I was the problem, but I have hope for the first time ever. With the help of this book and a therapist I believe I can build some self-esteem, find some confidence and start fully living for the first time ever. I'm really grateful.

The title of this book is "surviving," which hints at the potentially deadly devastation the targeted child feels as the BPD parent rips at the child's self-esteem, crashes through boundaries, and undermines any sense of stability in belonging to a family. BPD is crazy-making because of the self-doubt that results from trying to make sense of the parent-child relationship gone wrong, the assumed guilt, the constant attempts to "be better," and, especially, the fruitlessness of trying to get others to understand. I found Friedman's words pretty much a life raft in a storm. She offers the validation I needed to replace the humiliation I had accepted. Friedman continues to help me in my journey-- . The audio version is especially soothing. Information is power.

Validation

I have known for almost 10 years that my mother suffers from BPD (never been diagnosed, but I also know an undiagnosed alcoholic when I see one). It has been four years since I have stopped speaking to her. The hardest and best decision I have ever made.
Even though I have read many articles on the internet about BPD parents there has never been anything that has made me feel so validated in my recollection of my childhood. Since I have blocked out 80% of my childhood I can not fully articulate the terror I felt. I know I felt it, but I can't tell you specific events that caused it.
After reading the eerily familiar examples from the book's interviews, I beggan to feel relieved that I am not just an over-emotional attention seeking woman (something my mother convinced me of at a very young age), but a woman who was abused as a baby, child, teenager and adult.
I have both of my sister's reading this and they are having different reactions, so I know this book can be good for most people who survived a boderline parent.
Our husbands are planning on reading the book as well so they can fully appreciate our sometimes excessively emotional responses to situations.
I am now seeing a therapist because I don't feel embarrassed about my feelings.
I hope it helps other people the way it has helped me.

Interestingly the authors managed to combine revision techniques of the knee and hip in one book. Initially my thoughts were it would be to much for 1 theme, than again the chapters give a nice overview!
