Adventure and Romance

Family, romance, adventure, mystery, danger and “secrets”. Now, who doesn’t like this combination? I’ve read Lightning Lingers and REALLY, really liked this book. It’s a nail biter for sure. I like how Barbara "threads" her stories from one book into the next. When you read her books it's always wise to read the first one in a series of course, but if you don't, the way she writes just draws you right in and a synopsis of the storyline is there in the very first pages. In this one we travel to Mexico to a small town out in “nowhere”. There is a chase through a forest and while the characters are running for their lives, you feel like you are right there with them. I tell you, you won’t want to put the book down. CANNOT wait until the third one comes out and we find out what is behind all the mystery. Barbara Freethy is one of my favorite authors. I always try to read her novels. In fact I think I’ve read most all of them and have quite a few in my collection.

WOW ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE

Book two of the Lightening Strikes series was adventure packed. Picking where the first book left off we pick up with Jake and Kat as they head to Mexico to rescue Kat's brother. After their plane goes down they have to find their way to a remote village. And along the way they find some of the answers they need plus find their way back to each other. This book was non stop adventure and fun. Barbara has another hit and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Katherine & Jake's story!

Book 2 of the Lightning Strikes trilogy doesn't disappoint. In Book 2, we are drawn into the life of Alicia's brother, Jake. He is a pilot like his father was and even flies out of the same airstrip. Katherine is the one that got away. Jake has never stopped loving her. Katherine gets a call from her brother TJ from Mexico. He is there on a trip for work and feels that he is in danger. He wants Katherine to go home and watch over their mother. When Katherine gets there, she finds her mother in a worse case of dementia & poor health than she expected. TJ had not told her that he had hired home help for their mom. Jake is visiting his mother in the neighborhood when he finds out Katherine has returned.

When Katherine & Jake were dating, Jake was always telling Katherine and TJ stories about his great grandmother, the land in Mexico and their family connection to lightening. Believing that TJ will head to that village, Katherine ends up hiring Jake to fly her down there. They end up crashing in a lightning strike and running for their lives.

Will Katherine & Jake let their love win this time? Will they find TJ before it's too late? What about Jake's dad? Is this all just coincidence?

Barbara is great at writing a story that draws you deep into the story. You don't want to put it down. You are drawn into the characters and their lives and live their adventures with them. You could read this as a stand alone but you will miss out on some of the references from Book 1. I loved this book! It transitioned into the last book in the series and leaves you impatient for more!

A must have!

I have been practicing a ketogenic diet for a few months now and it has absolutely change my perspective of the Standard American Diet. I feel great when consuming a very low amount of carbs and I don't think I'll ever go back to the SAD diet. One thing I found troubling though when practicing a ketogenic diet was that I was eating very bland meals all of the time.. So when I stumbled upon this book, my love for Asian inspired dishes made me purchase it immediately! This has completely transformed my diet in the best way possible! All of the recipes in here are delicious and very quick and easy to make! If you're on a ketogenic diet but are lacking motivation to due bland meals, buy this book! It makes the diet so much easier. Plus all of the nutrition facts are listed for each recipe so counting your macros could not be easier! Highly recommended cookbook! I think I will be purchasing a hard copy soon so that I always have it handy in the kitchen.

About the Author

Prof. Vladutiu has been a professor at the Computer Engineering Department of the “Politehnica” University of Timisoara since 1990. Simon Benninga is Professor of Finance at Tel Aviv University and Visiting Professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His books on financial modeling and valuation are standards in the field of finance and have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Polish, and Italian.

Terrific error laden resource

It's odd that a b-school professor hasn't thought to recruit a gaggle of research assistants and cobble together a book like this. Unlike other finance texts, this book does actually do a good job of teaching the ins and outs of excel. Indeed, if one were interested in learning excel alone, the medium of finance would be a terrific avenue to picking up the program (and vice versa). They make sense together; both are lifeless mechanical knowledge bases that are, sadly, critical to understand. I picked up this book as a means of shoring up Excel skills before beginning a management consulting job and it has been helpful.

That said, there are countless errors in the explanations to the chapter exercises, rendering them nearly unusable at times. In some instances, it feels like a previous edition was not properly updated and in others, there are flat out mistakes in calculations, logic, or methodology. I've worked through the first two chapters and approximately 10 of the 50 exercise solutions are incorrect in some way. It's a shame Oxford (a terrific press) wasn't more diligent in the editing process. It's quite sloppily done (rushed to market?) and Professor Benninga (or Oxford) should consider releasing a corrected exercise update to those who purchased the book. For students planning on using the book for self study, I would look elsewhere until this issue is resolved.

A rare find

It is rare to find a book that can systematically guide one with no prior knowledge of a field to feeling comfortable with many of the basic concepts of the discipline. Dr. Benninga's book accomplishes this, meeting its goal of providing an understanding of the requisite concepts and applications for making financial decisions. It is replete with examples, each clearly delineated both in text and Excel spreadsheets reprinted in the text; each building on the prior examples. Essentially every example reflects real decisions, e.g., buying versus leasing, mortgages, depreciating equipment, buying securities. It also includes clear instructions on using the revelent Excel features but its focus is financial modeling, not Excel. I found the book both relevant and a joy to read, working the examples as I progressed. I highly recommend this book to anyone who, like me, barely knew words like depreciation or annuity let alone what they meant. It would be a great textbook for a finance course but it is also superb for self-study. Although I am an total neophyte in finance, I suspect this book falls in the very rare category of books like Richard Feynman's Lectures in Physics which can provide insight into a subject regardless of ones prior knowledge.

Good Content But Too Many Errors

This book has great content and covers a lot of the basics of finance and Excel, but TONS of problems have errors from either past editions not being updated or just being flat out wrong. It's frustrating spending hours just trying to figure out whether or not your answers are right and having to consult other sources and general logic, and sometimes you just end up skipping the problem because there's no point in stabbing in the dark without even knowing if you are correct or not. If it weren't for this issue, it'd be a 4 or 5 star book for sure.
