Good Basic Drawing Guide

Thanks to Kirsten Little for this great basic drawing guide. By going through the 9 chapters of this book, we can get the basic concepts of drawing. Everything is clearly mensioned with picture. Well structured and direct description. Appendix included list of sites where we can learn drawing which a great thing. I personally recommend this book.

Quality-both physical and content are below average

Firstly, the quality of the physical book wasn't 100%. The back cover was bent and looked old. The book wasn't written very well. Besides the grammatical errors the content wasn't as entertaining as I would've liked. Overall this was a bad purchase.

If you're a cricket fan, there aren't many books out there for you. However, in this book, Andrew Ward tells about some legendary matches, some of which happened back in the 1800's. If you like cricket, get this book!

A Robert Crais fan

I just finished "Suspect" by Robert Crais and happened upon Unspoken Bond. I sometimes like dog stories and was intrigued by the cover, so thought I'd read the sample. I'm glad that I did. I liked the detailed, "down home" writing style so much that I got the book and read it with enthusiasm.

In Unspoken Bond, the reader is quickly drawn in by a gripping scene where a puppy gets abandoned by the side of a road. Then, the book introduces the main character, David Hess, who is having a hard time during his final year in university. A really hard time: he's seriously disturbed by the breakup of his engagement and his increasing disillusion with his likely future. One night, while drinking with his room mate at a club, a tall brunette makes eye contact with David, acting like she knows him. She walks over to David, leans into him, but before she can ask him a question, her new husband, Colby Taylor, puts a stop to it. A fight ensues, which is one of many action scenes in the book.

David, Emma, and Colby are the three main characters and author O'Connor takes time to develop them carefully and, I think, lovingly. The dog, Joe, is an important character, but not the main one. He's more the catalyst for making things happen and there is plenty of action: fights, war, firearms, explosions, trampling bulls, snipers. The list goes on to make for a page-turning book, although a sensitive and thoughtful one.

This is definitely not your boy-rescues-girl kind of thing, an action thriller, a war novel or "just a dog story" - it's more a story about life itself. Women should like this story about a strong woman, but here is plenty of stuff for men to like too. Unspoken Bond is well worth the time to read and I kept thinking about it when I wasn't reading it. It wasn't until I read the "About the Author" section at the end, did I realize that this book was based on a real event.

At 65, there has never been a time in my life that I didn't have
A dog or two, a couple cats and sometimes other pets. I once had a horse that I could swear put a spell on me to do what she wanted instead of what I had intended. But my heart has always belonged to my faithful canines. They really do know your soul.

I have not not read such a good book like this in years. At first I was not sure I would like it but I'm glad I took the chance on this book because it blew me away. Beautifully written and you fall in love with the characters. When a book has me in tears at the end I know it touched my heart. Great read! Will recommend this.

A Great Historical Introduction

The text narrates with detail Magellan's quest for an alternative route to the coveted Spice Islands, a journey financed by an ambitious Spanish king, and led by a famous or infamous Portuguese-born explorer Magellan. The text is appropriate for use in the classroom; its language targets fourth to sixth graders; and its content is valuable. By this, I mean that it does not give the limited information that you would find in an encyclopedia. I even remember learning about Magellan in 7th grade, and never had an idea of how brutal and violent a journey of this nature could be. Readers may also get a better idea of what long journeys in ships were like: crews having to confront scurvy (an illness that affected the teeth), possible starvation, other illnesses related to malnutrition, and (in this text) mutiny. Although a violent account (readers learn from a man's throat being slit for leading a mutiny) and of torture devices used by Magellan to control sailors, the author is careful enough in describing these in a manner appropriate for school children addressed in these texts. As I read this text, I got a strong feeling that the greed of these empires in those days had dire consequences on the people used for these expeditions.

As in Ponce De Leon, this text also uses text features, such as sidebars, illustrations, maps, photos, and text boxes that give additional information in an effective manner. It even includes a recipe of a native food, or of a food consumed by the sailors. The text is also properly organized with headings and subtitles. In addition, information about the native peoples that are part of this story is included. This is a great complementary text about the exploration age.

Informative and Fun!

For such a short book, I found it to be full of fun little bits of trivia and perfect to hold the interest of a kid. It outlined the voyage of Magellan and gave the story from more than one perspective (did the crew do the right thing or not? The answer is left ambiguous) but more than just that is touched on. For example, a single page is devoted to describing what was provided for the crew - food and such. You end the book feeling that the survival of the crew was surprising and that fact gives weight to the idea that it was a monumental task worth celebrating, despite the tragedy and savagery that surrounded the whole thing.

For a book written to elementary students, I didn't ...

For a book written to elementary students, I didn't feel that the torture stories of the Spanish Inquisition and onboard Magellan's ship needed to be included. It is unfortunate because the illustrations would have been valuable for my 9 yo son's study of explorers but after he read a few pages he asked to not have to continue reading it. He found the stories too disturbing.
