A useful guide

As an educator, I feel that this book is a great source for anyone who plans on working with Moodle. Mr. Hollowell has written the book in a logical, easy to follow sequence, that allows for both cover to cover reading and/or referencing for subject specific questions. Institutions new to Moodle, particularly their tech departments, should consider this a must as it provides step by step instructions for getting started and provides ideas as to how Moodle can best be used to meet your needs. For those who are already using Moodle, this book will provide a variety of ideas on how Moodle can be used to streamline a wide range of tasks. As noted in the subtitle, this book will help readers to "use Moodle to manage and organize your administrative duties, monitor attendance records, manage student enrollment, record exam results, and much more". Whether you are completely new to Moodle or an experienced user, an administrator, teacher, or IT coordinator, this book will prove invaluable.

A really good beginner's guide

The two books I wish I had had when I started Moodling are this one and Mary Cooch's "Moodle for Teaching 7-14 Year Olds - Beginner's Guide" [...] Both are in the "Beginner's Guide" series by Packt Publishing, and both would have reduced considerably the learning curve to building a Moodle site and building Moodle classrooms. In fact, Mary Cooch has written a longer review of Jason Hollowell's book, which is located here: [...] In her usual, methodical approach, Mary goes chapter by chapter through "Moodle as a Curriculum and Information Management System." I'm just going to "gee whiz" about some specific parts.

I wish I'd known that I could install a test Moodle site on my computer. It's a fairly simple process, and Hollowell takes readers through it with great clarity and simple prose. If you're new to Moodle, this is the very first thing you should do: read his Chapter 1, and start playing to see what Moodle can do. He's also very clear about how to build a course, create categories for courses, and -- holy grail for large programs like mine -- use the Bulk Course Upload tool to create courses in, well, bulk. My institution had considerable floundering -- which I see among Moodle newbies on the discussion boards at Moodle.org -- about how to bulk enroll users, but had we had Jason's book, we would have saved ourselves several months of explorations.

The real meat of Hollowell's book, however, is in the last 5 of its 10 chapters. Here, we begin to see the true power of open source and of the "modular" part of the Moodle acronym. We learn how to make Moodle function as an information portal, how to add supervisory and parental roles using the Mentees block, how to add and use the Enhanced User Administration and Custom SQL blocks. These are "pieces" you can add to Moodle but that do not come built in. The addition is not complicated, and, as always, the installation and use is explained in simple terms for beginners. The true power of open source software is access to the database. Unlike a proprietary system in which users are walled off from the data and only allowed to make preset queries, open source allows users to pull any data they want. Even if you don't know how to write SQL queries (I don't), you can pay someone else to write the query, then plop it into the Custom SQL block, and teachers can run the query with a simple click any time they want.

One of the two concepts in Moodle hardest to wrap your head around is the meta course. Hollowell takes beginners through the creation of a meta course and demonstrates how it works with considerably less confusion than the Moodle documentation. He shows how metacourses can be used for efficient communication, especially in the context of an advisory or counseling system.

Finally, the last chapter shows off another virtue of open source software. With a grant from Nihon University, Hollowell designed the Registration Enrollment plugin and had the programming done by a Moodle Partner, Moodlerooms. The plugin was then contributed back to the Moodle community for use by anyone. This is a pretty sophisticated plugin while at the same time being simple to operate.

All told, this is a great beginner's guide book. Even if you use only half the chapters, you'll be well off for reading it.

Version Problems

I found the book very easy to follow but it suffers from the perennial problem of any publication of this type. Moodle itself has moved on (Now version 2.9) and, while I could have installed an earlier version of Moodle (1.9), I am reluctant to do this. The author could have made sure that the "addins" he recommended were still available for download (A few have been discontinued and the others extended) - maybe they could have been made available on the publisher's website. .

A Surprisingly Good Read

Abe Abraham’s ‘Thinking Your Way Out of the Ditch’ has been one of the most surprising books I have read in recent years. Although I was skeptical about its size and brevity when I first laid my hands on it, this slim book of 127 pages turned out to be quite clever and enjoyable to read.

A multidimensional book, it is a guide on how to cope with and survive seemingly insurmountable adversity in life and in business drawing from the author’s personal experience. It describes an enterprise’s journey from miniscule beginnings to a meteoric rise to become one of the largest minority owned government contracting businesses in the area. It illuminates the pitfalls and opportunities that are certain to confront one and the means to maintain stability and direction. The value of faith and family in keeping focused, are convincingly explained with appropriate passages from the good book and clever quotes.

It is also a virtual manifesto for success in the government contracting business with detailed technical inputs on winning contracts and avoiding pitfalls and snares. Some of the topics are fairly technical but clear enough even for the uninitiated to get more than just the essence of it. In this regard, this book is an excellent resource to those in interested in business (especially in contracting), and belongs in reference libraries of business schools.
The book is also a journey of self-discovery for the author tracing back to the humble beginnings and re-learning and discovering the essence of life. It is a remarkable book worth much more than the time it takes to read it

Worth the Money!!!

I bought this book on Seth's website the instant I saw he had an endorsement from Dan Kennedy.

When I started reading, it wasn't hard to see why.

The book is backed by a 500% money back guarantee, and based on what I just read, I doubt Seth
will be giving anyone $50 because they didn't like this book.

Like a lot of other entrepreneurs, I get sick of seeing people write books about markeitng theories.
I set tired of BS that sounds good but doesn't product results in real life. A lot of it isn't even
useful.

This book is packed with so much useful information and strategies, it could keep you busy for the next
10 years. In my opinion its worth more than any of the $2,000 marketing seminars I've attended.

I can't say anything bad about this book, except maybe that I found quite a few typos since it was
the first edition. I'm sure Seth is fixing that, but when it comes to solid content, this book is
in a class of its own.

Pay the $10, you won't be sorry.

I don't personally know Seth, but from the get-go I knew that Seth can produce, so I bought it without reading the book description.

I can tell you now that the description does not do the book justice.

There's just SO much in there.

If you're like me, you're either new to the world of business or looking at ways of marketing yourself more effectively... this book not only gives you the systems and strategies to do so, but changes your business mentality to one of a WINNER.

Heck... I think ANYONE could benefit from reading this book. Yes, that does include you, Mr Gates.

Being honest, I couldn't give you a 'favourite part.'

I learned something from every section, and the book engaged me SO much that I ended up writing a bunch of stuff down! I now have a load of notes which I can reference whenever I'm working with a client or looking to benefit my own business (I work as a Direct Response Copywriter.)

However, the most important lesson to take from the book is that is is down to YOU. Seth gives you the tools to create the Rolls Royce of a marketing machine, but you need to put it into action.

Great book with extras on dvd

I am really enjoying this new book for the new Network+ n10-006 exam. The dvd includes alot of extras. Practice tests, performance based simulations, and a copy of the new Simulator program which is awesome. I highly recommend this book.

CCNA's Opinion (Employer requires CompTIA Net+)

I have had my CCNA for the last year and a half… this book refreshes all of the information required to pass the Network+ Certification. It uses concise explanations with broad over views… (so you won’t be asking yourself what does that mean). The practice and simulation tools will strengthen your understanding of every aspect of networking. Keith shares his expertise in condensed precise clarity… when you finish the book review the App_C.pdf “Exam Essentials” is 12 pages reviewing the OSI model. I wish I had this when studying for the CCNA. The other quick reference guides are short and sweet reviewing them for a couple days before the test gives you the confidence and ability to pass easily.
The CCNA will not prepare you for everything. You need to know CompTIA procedures and ethical standards. Additionally it covers many CLI and GUI topics for multiple OS’s.
If you like clear detailed information the book is great. If you like hands on practice and simulations (like I do) this has more than I have ever found in any book. Honestly the amount of test material is exhaustive.
My opinion... this book will enhance the CCNA to easliy pass. The authors networking experience is priceless, the information presented is real world. Get the DELUXE version, you won't regret it.

**This Book is the truth..(Honest Review)

I am in a few different certification programs currently, used testout for my A+/PC Pro, and now Net+/Net Pro..along with course reading material/lectures from my class instructor.

I bought this book because the N10-005 updates in august to N10-006 and the material currently ive studied/have will be outdated.

all i can say is, use the study planner.. its a fool proof system to make you pass! incorporates different resources provided via reading, memory banks, lab simulators/test sims.. ect ive started using them from ch. 1 and its simplified, elegant, and well written..

cudos to keith barker, kevin wallace, and michael taylor!!

yes its $50+, but its msrp is like $110.. js

ive passed my A+/PC Pro, Net Pro(as of yesterday), and plan to take my Net+ within a month or so.

This is an excellent textbook, which I use for teaching an MRI class at UC Berkeley.
It is clear, simple and reads very smoothly. Chapters 1-7 are complete, but the rest are draft chapters.

I strongly recommend student to buy directly from Lulu.com, since all the sellers here are overpricing this book.
