Fantastic thriller, that does not read like a YA book!

You might think your know the people in your life. But do you?

That is really the first thought I had, after finishing this book. Which should tell you something!

But lets start at the beginning, shall we?

When i first started to read this book -for about the first 10% or so of it really- i was unsure about it.

The characters felt rather boring and the constant naming and trashing people got on my nerves a bit.

But i read on, and thank god i did!

It seems that Kelly needed those first few pages to get into her writing style, because the rest of the book is really good!

She manages to suck you into the story, telling details and giving information about what is happening and hints of who might be connected without actually giving the answers away.

Kelly really manages to write interesting characters and relations between them, put a spin on situations and go to extremes. But not over the top.

For most of the book it doesn't feel like you are reading about teenagers, but an adult thriller -mostly because those kids just go nosing around in business they should really not be nosing around in at their age! Still....

There are some parts -like i said the beginning and a few sentences here and there in the rest of the book- that shows that sometimes the author tried to bring in this whole teenage situation and name calling and overdone dramatics. But mostly, Kelly focused on the story itself and the mystery about the crimes.

You all should read it. It is fantastic! Just push through those first few pages/percent of the book and get sucked into a heart-racing, edge-of-my-seat reading experience!

Honestly this book to me is what i expected from Gone Girl, with the kind of praise that book received. And while i did not feel that way about Gone Girl at all, to me this book -Foxglove Killings- actually would deserve all the price about never knowing what actually happens, never knowing who you can trust, and a narrator that has no idea what the heck is going on, just as the reader does!

Tara Kelly has crafted an unnerving mystery that keeps you guessing until the end!

And I truly mean that because guess what? I didn't predict who the killer was! For that alone, I love The Foxglove Killings. Honestly, it doesn't happen often. Usually if it's not outright obvious there's some little clue that gives it away just that bit too early, but this time around I got to enjoy the revelation in the moment. And oh, how I did. It wasn't that it's this huge giant shock because it does make sense. For me, I paused, replayed all that had happened in this new light and thought "well, holy shit". Major kudos to Tara Kelly. I feel like I should've realised and that makes it all the better. What Kelly did such a fantastic job of was providing us multiple suspects. So many characters throughout this book could've legitimately been the killer, because at one time or another each had motive and Kelly successfully had me questioning all of them. This only builds the tension because like Nova I couldn't decide who to trust and so there's this constant note of danger, increasing as the story continues and characters disappear.

The suspense of The Foxglove Killings is palpable. This book is definitely a thriller. Right from the beginning Kelly sets the scene and she never loses the tone throughout the rest of the novel. It is an intense, nerve-wracking and chilling atmospheric read that I couldn't put down. I started reading The Foxglove Killings pretty late and at about 11.30pm when I was getting into bed, Kindle had helpfully informed me I only had an hour and a half left to read. I figured, why not? I had nowhere to be the next day. Yeah, finishing the book at 1.30am in a pitch black and silent house? Not my brightest idea. It's not that The Foxglove Killings crosses into horror. There's certainly some horrific moments but not in an overly gory, scare the bejeezus out of you way. It's subtle. It's the creepy moments that have you reading with bated breath, that evoke just enough fear and disgust that your skin crawls. It's the descriptions of that feeling of being watched, of hearing a noise outside the window, of unknowingly being vulnerable and in danger, of realising just how sadistic the killer is. I finished The Foxglove Killings, settled in to go to sleep, and then froze with fear because something rustled outside my window, which is actually a common noise. It wasn't until that moment that I even realised Kelly's writing had honestly freaked me out. Which then had me grinning, because I do love being scared. It just wasn't something I expected from this book!

The Foxglove Killings portrays some heartfelt drama too. Because while a psychopathic killer is on the loose, life still goes on. So throughout this book there's still the everyday issues of love, loss, bullying, family, friendship, sex, betrayal, prejudice, and the like. Kelly strikes a great balance, because the everydayness, the things seemingly unrelated to the murders and the killer, still increase the terrifying nature of the mystery. Because let's face it, one of these characters, dealing with their own issues, is also a murderer. Plus so many of the characters have an inherent brutality to them. This entire town has that feeling, what with the feud between the residents and the 'cakes'. It's terrible, the fighting and bullying. And Nova is caught in the middle of it. I really liked Nova. She has this depth to her, this thoughtfulness and way of seeing and feeling that is relatable. I liked her relationships with other characters, Alex especially. You're hoping these two figure out their feelings for each other and are able to make it work while I also worrying there's more to it that they can't get past. The emotion of being best friends but facing inevitable changes and the possibility of romance is charged. Jenika increases the tension, both of the story and between Nova and Alex. She's full of so much anger and bitterness. The way her and Nova clash but also connect is great. Seriously, the intensity between all of these characters kind of made my heart hurt. The clear winner for Favourite Character is Gramps though. I loved how he was always prepared to listen to Nova, to be honest and forthright. He gave you the sense that everything could be okay, which is interesting in a book that is at times so unsettling.

The Foxglove Killings is everything I want in a mystery. Unpredictable and frightening, it packs a whollop.

Smack Full of Mystery!

I’m all about a great YA mystery, and while the actual synopsis of the Foxglove Killings sounded promising, it still had that ring of Nancy Drew to it of a wanna be teen detective that almost threw me off of it. But I am so thrilled that I went ahead and read this novel as it was nothing like I imagined it would be!

Our story begins with our heroine, Nova, who lives in a small coastal town that’s pretty run down, and only manages to survive by rich people, who love to use their small town as a summer get away. And this is where all her trouble begins. With the resurgence of the “cakes” as they call them, it also means Nova has to deal with her ex-boyfriend; a guy whom she thought had loved her. And if dealing with the cruel tendencies of the cakes wasn’t enough Nova’s best friend is starting to act odd. The Alex she always knew is changing, and for her, it’s not in his best interest. Especially when she finds out he’s been hanging out with her arch nemesis. And if all of this wasn’t enough, add into the mix a string of mutilated animals that have been unearthed around her town, weird anonymous notes sent to her, people not acting their norm, and to top everything off someone is killing teens. If Nova wants to keep those she loves safe, she knows she needs to figure out the connection, and do it quickly before anyone she loves becomes the next victim.

I am the first person who would totally bash a novel that’s light and fluffy with this type of plot, and full of idiotic characters who would do something totally not within the realm of logic when it comes to a psychopath around town. Luckily for me, not only did the Foxglove Killings have a massively juicy plot, but not one character did anything that made them appear stupid. They were all written perfectly, and acted per the norm of a regular teen in these situations. Nova wasn’t the junior detective I was fearing, but instead had a logical head on her shoulders, and didn’t truly “sleuth” her way around the mystery. Instead she focused on the why and the how of each thing that went wrong, and tried using logic to tie everything together. As for the villain….I NEVER saw it coming. My mind just did not venture into that area, and I was fully surprised by the outcome! Which was such a full out change from figuring out the killer, motive, and everything else within three seconds flat of reading other books in the same line. I seriously did not figure it out until it actually happened, and I won’t give anything away! The Foxglove Killings was a fantastic read with a great plot, good set of characters, and great ending! I will say I wish things had changed a little bit in the actual epilogue, but it does end, and I felt everything was pretty much answered. I totally recommend this book if you love a good mystery!

About the Author
George Haddow currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Homeland Security Studies program at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. Prior to jpining academia, Mr. Haddow worked for eight years in the Office of the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as the White House Liaison and the deputy Chief of Staff. He is a founding partner of Bullock and Haddow LLC, a disaster management consulting firm.

Jane A. Bullock has worked in emergency management for over 20 years most recently as the Chief of Staff to James Lee Witt the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In this position Ms. Bullock served as principal advisor to the Director on all Agency programmatic and administrative activities, provided advice and recommendations to the Director on policies required to carry out the mission of the agency; managed the day-to-day operations of the Agency; directed, monitored, and evaluated Agency strategic and communication processes; and oversaw administration of the Agency’s resources, including the disaster relief fund. Represented the Director and the Administration with Congress, State and municipal governments, foreign officials, constituent groups and the media. Served as a principal spokesperson for the Agency’s programs both before, during and after disasters. Chief architect of FEMA’s Project Impact: Building Disaster Resistant Communities, a nationwide effort by communities and businesses to implement prevention and risk reduction programs. Principal on a project to create National Disaster Response and Mitigation system for Argentina and in six Central American and Caribbean countries. Served as part of the Clinton Administration’s communications team for the Y2K issue.

Damon P. Coppola is a Partner with Bullock and Haddow LLC, a disaster management consulting firm. He has extensive experience in disaster preparedness and planning through his work with the World Bank Group; The Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management; the US Army Corps of Engineers; and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, among others. Mr. Coppola is the author of Introduction to International Disaster Management (Butterworth-Heinemann), and co-author of Introduction to Homeland Security (Butterworth-Heinemann) and Hazards Risk Management (The Federal Emergency Management Agency). He has also been published in several industry journals, including Disaster Prevention and Management, The Beacon, The American Society of Professional Emergency Planners Journal, and The International Association of Emergency Managers Newsletter, among others. Mr. Coppola holds an M.E.M in Crisis, Emergency, and Risk Management from George Washington University.

Mediocre Text, Full of Political Bias and Errors

The text seems to do a decent job of presenting the current state of emergency management, and covers a wide range of mitigation, preparedness, response, and additional topics (from a "general" perspective).

The first sections of the book, however, are filled with obvious political bias and pandering/blaming. The authors spent time working under the Clinton Administrations FEMA, and seem to spend no time hiding their disdain for all things of the opposing political aisle. I don't have a particular preference as far as politics goes, but the text makes it too obvious not to see. I appreciate later sections of the book, but none of this was really necessary to explore the topic, and made me question the integrity of subsequent chapters.

In addition to that, there are numerous factual and date errors that, for a 5th edition of a book, seem too glaring to not have been caught. These persist throughout the book, along with many instances of awkward phrasing.

Excellent text for introductory and intermediate Emergency Management

This text provides and in-depth analysis of Emergency Management. The free online chapter quizzes are a wonderful addition for a full understanding of the subject area. I would recommend this text to anyone looking to get a good understanding of the field without the complexity of unfamiliar terminology.

"Life In The Age Of Television Was A Feast For The Eye..."

Karal Ann Martling tucks her mission in writing "As Seen On TV" in that last sentence of the next-to-last chapter of her fascinating book. She tours the 1950s' TV-raised images, from First Lady Mamie Eisenhower's dress closet to her husband's paintings to garish car in the garage, ready-made food in the kitchen, and herky-jerky TV images pointing to changed American culture and aestetic. Hers is a more entertaining, breezier read than recent books from, respectively, David Halberstam on the 1950s or historian Michael Kammen on American preference.(Marling shared time at Cornell with Kammen, thanking his students in her acknowledgements for "challenging lunchtime conversation.")
Marling merges era icons, fads, and seminal events more seamlessly into social statement than Halberstam did or Kammen attempted. Her understanding of cars evolving into social statements segues best into the image of Elvis Presley, the "King of Rock and Roll" for whom the "gorp"-covered Cadillac was chariot of choice. (she also credits Martin and Lewis with exposing the entertainment's dual sensibilities during early TV).
Marling also writes of home convenience from new appliances and quick dinners colliding with the rustic, more honorable life many felt had been replaced. This clash inspired and popularized Grandma Moses' idealized portraits of American country life, Walt Disney's scale model re-creation of small-town America at Disneyland (and on the accompanying TV program), and Betty Crocker's shorthand version of motherly mentoring through General Mills' best-selling cookbook. Marling's chapter on Walt Disney's inspirations for creating the park is among the book's most fascinating. But a chapter on "American Bandstand," should Marling have chosen to include it, may have tied even more loose ends together.
The book may also have done with some re-arrangement; the closing chapter accurately and humorously chronicles the 1959 Richard Nixon-Nikita Krushchev "kitchen debate." But its tale of form of function, argued by its most important leaders at the peak of Cold War hysteria, may have been more effective introducing Marling's tale. The book may then have received more social context by stating sooner Nixon's belief, according to Marling, in "style as a manifestation or a symbol of difference and, in difference, multiplicity - the possibility of choice - as...connecting idle consumer fetishism to ideology." This would also have more closely tied the 1950s' garish color imagery with its parallel, grainier black-and-white images (Nixon, the Cold War, and Joe McCarthy, a standout 50s figure seen on TV but not in this book.) Nonetheless, "As Seen On TV" is a fun, informative read for those wishing to understand the reasoning behind an era's unforgettable images.

Very interesting reading. It is amazing to actually see how television has changed American life. I can't even fathom how life would be today, without TV. A great read for all who are interested in American pop culture in the 1950s.

Very interesting read

I was born in the 60s but have always had an interest in the 50s. This book gave me some feel for it. Everything from food to Elvis getting his hair cut, to those big wings on cars is here. Even the paint-by-numbers craze is written up. There is a chapter on Disneyland 1955 too. The "New Look" is here, that fashion style after the war. There arent tons of pics, and what there are are black and white.

David J. Pelzer's mother, Catherine Roerva, was, he writes in this ghastly, fascinating memoir, a devoted den mother to the Cub Scouts in her care, and somewhat nurturant to her children--but not to David, whom she referred to as "an It." This book is a brief, horrifying account of the bizarre tortures she inflicted on him, told from the point of view of the author as a young boy being starved, stabbed, smashed face-first into mirrors, forced to eat the contents of his sibling's diapers and a spoonful of ammonia, and burned over a gas stove by a maniacal, alcoholic mom. Sometimes she claimed he had violated some rule--no walking on the grass at school!--but mostly it was pure sadism. Inexplicably, his father didn't protect him; only an alert schoolteacher saved David. One wants to learn more about his ordeal and its aftermath, and now he's written a sequel, The Lost Boy, detailing his life in the foster-care system.

Though it's a grim story, A Child Called "It" is very much in the tradition of Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul and the many books in that upbeat series, whose author Pelzer thanks for helping get his book going. It's all about weathering adversity to find love, and Pelzer is an expert witness.

Grade 9 Up?This autobiographical account charts the abuse of a young boy as his alcoholic mother first isolates him from the rest of the family; then torments him; and finally nearly kills him through starvation, poisoning, and one dramatic stabbing. Pelzer's portrayal of domestic tyranny and eventual escape is unforgettable, but falls short of providing understanding of extreme abuse or how he made his journey from "Victim to Victor." It takes some work to get past the poor writing and the self-aggrandizing back matter, but the book tries fervently to provide a much-needed perspective. One of the greater obstacles to healing for males is admitting that they have been victims, especially if their perpetrator is a woman. This author has overcome that obstacle and succeeded in life by such masculine norms as joining the Air Force and receiving awards for his volunteerism. However, while personal accounts of child maltreatment provide crucial information about the realities of childhood, youngsters need insight and hope in order to digest the raw material of abuse. James Deem's The 3 NBs of Julian Drew (Houghton, 1994) is a well-crafted, fictional work that effectively covers much of the same ground.?Carolyn Polese, Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA

Once I started reading this book, I did not ...

Once I started reading this book, I did not want to put it down. I am so grateful for having discovered, ' A Child Called It", as I was severely abused from the ages 5 to 17 years old. This book has started an inner healing process.As I started reading, I started crying, crying so loudly that I started wailing. Uncontrollable tears rolling down my cheeks, and many, many tissues. I applaud Dave Pelzer for using his torturous past to help bring healing to so many people. I can not wait to read his other books. If you can read this review Dave, I want to say Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you.

Difficult

It took me a long time to read the book. I had to put it away many, many times. My own life has so many similarities. In a different way, with different people, but the outcome is the same. And the struggle to survive is too. The daily struggle to regain your life and to believe you are worth something. That.
Thanks Dave Pelzer, for your courage to put into words what you went through and in doing so helping people like me.

Great story of survival & strength of the human spirit

I bought this book a couple years ago but never had a chance to read it til recently. Very sad story of a little boy in a dysfunctional family who was horribly mistreated, neglected, and abused by his mentally ill and evil mother. It's amazing he survived and didn't turn into a serial killer or something. His mother was a real piece of work and sadly was never made to pay for her crimes, but his brothers were creeps, too. Gramma wasn't any better. So sad that this tormented child had no one to turn to and no one he could trust. My childhood wasn't all sunshine and roses, but I can't imagine living with the daily horrors this little boy was forced to endure. I'm glad that some of the people at school finally started to pay attention and made an attempt to help him, but it was too little, too late. Thank God he was eventually removed from this hellish environment by age 12.

I have since read the other 2 sequels to this book and Dave's other books. (He needs a better editor.) I hope sharing his story has been cathartic for him. It seems his life as an adult has not been easy or without heartache, but I pray God will give him perfect healing and release him from the pain of his unfortunate past. He is a survivor. I hope the people in his life will quit taking advantage of him and that his years will be peaceful and full of joy and happiness.

I want to recommend a couple similar true abuse/survival stories by authors in the UK that were better and even more compelling:

1. Peter Roche's book "Unloved" will break your heart! He was pushed out the door and made to fend for himself while he was still in diapers. The pitiful photo on the book's cover is a picture of him taken as a baby that was used as propoganda by the UK in their attempts to make a show of helping the poor and needy back in the '60's, although they did not help this poor child or his family in the least! How this little boy survived and lived to tell about it, I will never know, but I'm so glad he did. It should be required reading for anybody 14 and up. 2. Kat Ward's series of Keri books (there are 5). Her childhood in the UK was horrific. Her mother was evil incarnate and her step-father was just as evil. She was mistreated in the worst possible ways and when she was finally able to tell someone she trusted, her mother made sure nobody believed her and made her life a living hell. Even once she was in the system, she was not safe from abuse or from her mother's cruelty. I bought the Kindle versions and read through the entire series in a week's time (they were each around 500+ pages long). I didn't get much sleep that week, but couldn't put them down. She is an excellent writer and made me feel like I was right there with her the whole time. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and am anxiously hoping she will put out a part 6.

Terrible, terrible

The textbook is fine but it was the service of getting the textbook that wasn't! I know it was an international order, but to take 1 month to get my book and they didn't even try to deliver it to my home, it went straight to the post office without me knowing. I mean I expected this book to arrive later than usual, but to arrive 1 month after I order it, and on top of it I had problems ordering it! It was really difficult to catch up in the class this book was for because of the late arrival.

Otherwise the book was brand-new and I can't really complain about the content of the book because I need it for school.
