Jack Lysfjord, PhD, is Principal Consultant for Lysfjord Consulting LLC. For over 26 years, Lysfjord has held a variety of management positions with Bosch Packaging Technology (formerly TL Systems Corporation) that produced aseptic processing equipment for producing injectable drugs. He is a member of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE), Parenteral Drug Association (PDA), American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), the American Glove Box Society (AGS), The Parenteral Society (UK), The Isolator Users Group (UK), R3 Nordic (Nordic Clean Room Processing Society) and Barrier Users Group Symposium (BUGS) of which he is Chairman. He is a frequent speaker and course leader on the topics of aseptic processing, RABS (Restricted Access Barrier Systems) and barrier isolator systems in the US, Europe and Asia and has been the author and co-author for numerous technical papers and articles. Lysfjord holds a B.S. in Mechanical/Industrial Engineering from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the University of St Thomas.

Wonderful reference.

This is a really great book. Not ONE WORD of drug-war propoganda from either side. Lots of color pictures and clear, simple text. The first couple of pages covers the CSA (Controlled Substance Act) schedules and legalization of psychoactive drugs. The next 350 pages is a "Tablet And Capsule Imprint" guide, a really cool section for identification of mysterious pills. After that, about 100 pages of controlled prescription drugs(pictures!)-use, effects, and abuse. Then comes 250 pages of illegal drugs-from the amphetamines and cocaine to psilocybin and peyote and even the Bufo alvarius toad (lots of legal highs). Includes pics and text on production and\or synthesis, use, paraphenalia, and effects. Then a nice slang\glossary, chemical precursor list, pharmaceutical manufacturers, a drugs-in-urine duration table, weight conversion chart, even poison control numbers! This is a must-have for concerned parents, law enforcement, and, most of all, users and enthusiasts(great for pill heads)!

A former corporate manager and Naval officer (Vietnam veteran), he was a senior fellow at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and a program consultant at the National Center for Productivity and Quality of Working Life.

Keidel’s articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Management Science, and several other academic and practitioner-oriented journals. He is the author of three previous books: Game Plans: Sports Strategies for Business (Dutton, 1985; Berkley, 1986; Beard Books, 2006); Corporate Players: Designs for Working and Winning Together (Wiley, 1988; Beard Books, 2005); and Seeing Organizational Patterns: A New Theory and Language of Organizational Design (Berrett-Koehler, 1995; Beard Books, 2005), which was nominated for the Academy of Management’s 1996 George R. Terry Book Award.

Keidel received his BA from Williams College, and his MBA and PhD (Social Systems Sciences) from Wharton.

An actiobable approach to changing your thinking, better in hard copy but not at a premium price.

Strategy a complex and confusing area of business for the simple reason that strategy requires answering difficult questions for which there are no clear and simple answers. A lack of clear and consistent tools has created a whole strategic industrial complex as there are as many ways to do a strategy as there are stars in the sky - until now.

Robert Keidel's The Geometry of Strategy offers a simple, intuitive and powerful set of strategy tools that any one can use. Based on his personal experience as an executive, consultant and business school professor, Keidel has broken down the strategy process into its essential cognitive elements and then equated them with simple geometric shapes.

- Point thinking - its either black or white
- Linear thinking - an issue exists as choices on a spectrum
- Angular thinking - an issue is black or white - both/and
- Triangular thinking - an issue as a blend of autonomy, control and cooperation

The book focused on how to apply these different `geo-mental' (my word) models to various strategic issues and decisions. The book is organized by the different ways of thinking rather than exploring how that thinking could produce different results for the same issue.

Overall a good book for a student of strategy, helpful for executives who have the time to think through these issues - that should be everyone, but often its not. If you have the time to think, and the desire to think differently and you purchase the book in hard copy, then the Geometry of Strategy is worth the investment of your time and attention.

NOTE: This book is a good investment at $15 - 25 for the hard copy, similar to the e book price. When I checked the hardcopy price on amazon was over $100, a level at which I cannot recommend the book, even though I did not get as much value from reading the eBook as I would have from having it in hard copy.

Strengths

The completeness of Keidel's treatment of the issues related to strategy and organizational definition.

The examples used to illustrate the tools and the different ways of thinking.

The illustrations that make it easy for you to see how your situation could be represented in these geometries.

Challenges

The book is conceptual in nature so its about how you think about these issues rather than address specific points like technology, HR, etc. That is not bad as you need to think clearly to make good decisions, but for people looking for a recipe at the functional level will not find it here.

This is not a good e-Book. Much of the book's value rests in its illustrations on how to use the different geometry's. Because of this I would recommend purchasing the book in hardcopy rather than electronically. I purchased a Kindle version and found myself recopying the diagrams into a notebook so I could think and annotate them better.

The writing style is rather academic and heavy requiring your concentration to work though and digest. This is another reason for not purchasing this as an eBook that one tends to read/skim more than study.

The book concentrates on Keidel's ideas and points without putting them into the broader context of what the reader may already know. I get the impression hat the book assumes that there is only one way to do strategy, which limits your ability to bring the reader's experience into play.

An inspiration in managment and organizational thinking

Robert W Keidel is a brilliant thinker who deserves far more visibility than he has in the global management arena. His latest book is an inspiration and a great, much expected (for me) follow up to `Seeing organizational patterns', a source of stimulation I return to often in my work as a consultant, author and speaker. I wish we could make Keidel's work compulsory to anybody with organizational/management responsibilities. For one tenth of Keidel's ideas others have created guru empires with little new ideas but a lot of noise. Thanks Robert.

I found this book reads fast. It's not a simple read, but it's organized well and has a number of useful concepts. Unlike some other books, I can see how the information correlates with my professional career. I was renting it, but went ahead and bought it because I might want to refer back to the information at a later date.

Highly recommended book for those new to Baccarat

Baccarat is the only casino game I play and I decided to write a book about the game. Once I finished the manuscript, I wanted to compare my findings with others who had written about the game. Brian's book Secrets of Winning Baccarat. Would be my number one recommendation for those interested in learning about the game. As of this writing, the book has received some poor ratings from other readers most of which are related to an approach the author of the provides as an example of play. To this, and based on my own experience, there are many approaches one can take to playing the game and each will yield different results and anything a player does will come down to their gambling goals and action requirements. Perhaps the author could have made this point more clear. However, when I read the book, I didn't think that his method was the only way to play the game, but rather, a correct accounting of his actual experiences. I enjoyed the book and would highly recommend it.

Should be a movie

Hope it's true that Tom Hanks is developing something for HBO based on this book as it's a tale well told of how a man with deep family roots in the furniture manufacturing industry didn't cash in his chips as cheap imports flooded the US market. He fought back to keep factories going and save US jobs. The author doesn't paint him as a saint or someone with all the answers. If you don't know someone who has lost a manufacturing job because it went overseas or if you don't think those jobs matter to you personally, read this book. Millions of people have lost their jobs as US plants have closed. And those job losses affect everyone in this country one way or another. Reading about international trade agreements may sound like a cure for insomnia. But the author simplifies what happens when unfair trade practices by other countries leave people in this country with no way to feed their families. The book traces the history of the good, bad and ugly of furniture making in the South from its beginnings to the current day when some people question whether it can survive. Fantastic new series...loved it!!!

I freaking loved this book!!! Filled with magic, gods and all sorts of paranormal goodies. Seriously, I could not put the book down. Great beginning to what will be a fantastic new series. Lots of action, hints of romance, an abundance of fantastical creatures....let's just say I loved the book and highly recommend it. Kudos to the author!

Frustrating Portrayal of the Female Protagonist and Alpha Male Love Interest -- Again

Though there are some interesting concepts (tropes collide with shapers, shifters, gods, and vampires) it was REALLY tough for me to get past Chapter 5. Lexi and her friend Sylvia are in hiding since they snubbed a powerful shaper's (Anders) request to steal a ring. His response? Burn down their apartment block which probably killed a few of their friends and neighbors. Sylvia, a shifter, is so distraught over this she has not shifted from her cat form for months.

The beginning of the book picks up with Lexi stealing something from the Mayor to stick it to him for firing her pregnant neighbor. At first, I thought this was cool since pregnant women often find themselves on the wrong end of a firing because of stigma, however, it's not long that I began to realize that making rash, dangerous decisions is just part of Lexi's character and it becomes quite frustrating at times considering she's putting her VERY traumatized best friend Sylvia in danger. She doesn't mention her plans to her friend even though it is very possible it will (and does) allow Anders to find them.

When Lexi meets Jake Steele, the love interest and a very powerful fire shaper who works with Anders, he threatens her with fire FOR NO APPARENT REASON. Can we say triggered? Abusive? Annoying as all hell? It's so frustrating to read about another female protagonist willing to overlook threats of bodily harm from a sexy, "his cheek bones can cut you" dude because her attraction to him is so intense. Considering the damage fire has done to Lexi, her best friend, and previous life you'd think a strong, stubborn woman would be a little more upset with these tactics and say something to him about his behavior. In fact, it takes another male character to vouch for her for Jake to stop being such a douche.

And Jake! He is so frustrating and not at all hot. When Lexi has just saved two boys, she has a few too many celebratory drinks and he basically forces her to let him walk her home. In fact, Jake doesn't seem to be able to take "no, stop coming onto me" seriously. He just ignores her "I'm not interested" responses. He flip flops so much between flirting and threatening it was honestly disturbing.

While this book may be a quick, sometimes entertaining read there were too many character development and plot holes for it to work.

I picked Stolen Magic from Kindle Unlimited and I'm so glad that I did

Wow! I picked Stolen Magic from Kindle Unlimited and I'm so glad that I did. To say it's action packed is an understatement. Also, I liked the mix of Greek mythology in the story line and I certainly enjoyed the characters. Lexi Jardine, a thief can control animals and she and her best friend Sylvie(Syl), a werecat, are hiding out in the town of Berkeley's Bay. Then a new fireshaper shows up in town. Jacob Steele's hot as hell but watches Lexi with suspicious eyes and he's watching her every move, her safe haven starts feeling more like a trap. Without giving spoilers, read the car chase towards the end...it's mind boggling! I enjoyed the characters, especially Syl and a certain "vampire", Alberto. It was all great fun and certainly a very easy to sit and read pretty much in one go!
I'm now look forward to book two, Murdered Gods,which I just acquired. Happy reading!

John C. Lennox is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College. He lectures on Faith and Science for the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. He is author of a number of books on the relations of science, religion and ethics. He and his wife Sally live near Oxford.

Elegant and delightful.

John Lennox, who teaches mathematics and philosophy of science at Oxford University, comes out of the closet as a "creationist" (some will say) in this incisive and readable book. That is to say, not only does he place theoretical limits on the "magisteria" of science, he also finds positive empirical limits to what physics and biology can in fact explain about our strange, glorious, troubling cosmos.

I haven't read Lennox' previous books, so I don't know how far he has gone this way before, but it seems a gutsy move. (When he begins the section on biology, aware of the acrimony that has surrounded the evolution debate, he taps out his own tongue in cheek epitath: "Here lies the body of John Lennox . . . ") Oxford was once the home of Wesley and Boyle and Lewis, but Richard Dawkins casts a shadow there now -- one member of the science faculty told me maybe 60% of his colleagues agree more or less with Dawkins, whether they've read him or not. And unlike Alister McGrath (who however has the class and good taste to recommend this book), Lennox is more in the Intelligent Design camp than "theistic evolution" or "biologos." But the term "camp" here is misleading: to Lennox, the search for truth seems less a "darwinian" competition between fortified and hostile foes lobbying shells at one another, but as a genial and informed dialectical journey among pilgrims.

The book covers all the main questions: the nature of science, origin of the universe, anthropic "coincidences," origin of life, mutations, fossils. Lennox dialogues with Dawkins, as one would expect, and with many leading scientific thinkers. The prose is clear as a mountain creek tumbling over stones.

The main weakness of the book, in my view, has to do with Lennox' discussion of Intelligent Design. Here he quotes a number of people -- Michael Behe, Stephen Meyer, Hugh Ross -- who are in the eyes of many skeptics highly controversial. I don't mind that -- I spent a couple months defending Behe against some rather savage and unfair attacks, so I appreciate his ability to shrug off the jihadist strand of evolutionary apologetics. But I do think Lennox needs to interact with more serious critics at this point a bit more, to establish his arguments. Still, he goes into far more detail than Dawkins on this issue.

In short, this is an excellent contribution to the "God" debates. Readers may also enjoy my new book, The Truth Behind the New Atheism, which responds to Dawkins, Harris, Dennett and Hitchens on a variety of topics, including some covered in this book.

Clear, Concise and Deeply Penetrating

After reading The God Delusion a year ago I became gripped and eventually spellbound by the God vs. no god debate that seems more and more to be occupying the collective attention of our culture. In my desire to gain a fuller understanding of both perspectives, I've since immersed myself in the most popular literature on the subject (penned by Harris, Dawkins, Hutchings, Davis, Flew, McGrath, Collins, DeSuza etc.). The arguments and lines of reasoning expressed in John Lennox's book entitled "God's Undertaker" are, by far, the most deep and insightful I've read on the subject to date.

Lennox begins God's Undertaker by making a critical distinction between science and materialist/naturalist philosophy that, in and of itself, provides a resounding response in the negative to the question posed in the book's subtitle (Has science buried God?). Lennox explains that science in an uncontaminated form seeks exclusively to explore the universe by examining its physical properties and apparent laws without making claims about what might or might not exist beyond its own domain. Science therefore neither rules out nor affirms the existence of the supernatural. Naturalism, on the other hand, is philosophically bound to a preconceived notion regarding the nature of reality; namely that it is limited exclusively to the substantial and, consequently, that truth can only be found through an examination of material phenomenon. In short, it is naturalism, not science, which is at odds with theism.

Lennox goes on to illustrate the importance of making such a distinction by pointing out the deceptive and duplicitous way in which materialists use the well earned respect of science to cloak arguments against the existence of God that not only lack scientific support but are in fact faith based and not scientific at all! Lennox hammers home the irony of this point, giving no slack to the likes of Dawkins who, while blindly ascribing god-like qualities to neutrons and electrons, mockingly portray theists as deluded dunces who base their lives on a completely imaginary deity.

Lennox is no enemy of science. He is a purist who believes that what science points to is equally as important as what it explicitly reveals. Consequently, he is not only in awe of what science has achieved but he enthusiastically declares the important role science has played in the development of his own belief in God. Anchored by the very science that has been high jacked by Dawkins and company, Lennox demonstrates that belief in a single all powerful God is not only rational but is in fact the best conclusion one can draw from the known physical universe. Lennox does this in the heart of God's Undertaker by engaging the scientific arguments used by materialists head-on in an "ask for no quarter, give no quarter" fashion that pays homage to his Celtic heritage.

Specifically, Lennox confronts the naturalist's take on cosmology, microbiology, evolution, and biogenesis and mounts a particularly robust argument for an intelligently designed universe in later chapters devoted to information science. While it is beyond the scope of this review to elucidate each of Lennox's arguments, I will state that I found them to be well-balanced and, in most cases, compelling. I highly endorse this read for anyone interested in the origins of our universe.

Clarifying the issues about science and religion

In this very readable and well-researched book John Lennox does a brilliant job of exposing the real issues involved in any discussion of the relationship between science and religion. The fundamental point, which he makes so well, is that the debate is NOT about science VERSUS religion, but has to do with different world views (namely naturalism - the view that there is nothing but nature and the material world - contrasted with theism - the view that there is a God ) and the relationship of each with science. Dr Lennox then asks the all-important question: Which world view sits most comfortably with science?

What is so important about this book is that it does not counter the popular rhetoric and sloganeering (characteristic of many of those who believe that naturalism is the world view that is the logical consequence of science) with more of the same. In his careful and systematic examination of the scientific evidence Dr Lennox shows that science is not only highly consistent with a theistic world view, but even points towards it. To this end he takes us on a journey that considers the history and limits of science, as well as many of its most up-to-date findings including modern evolutionary theory, design theory, irreducible complexity and information theory. Bringing to bear his analytical and logical skills as a research mathematician, he also exposes many fallacious arguments that are often used to "prove" that science has buried God.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who seriously wishes both to understand the real nature of the debate that is currently receiving much exposure in the media, and to come to a conclusion based on evidence and reason rather than prejudice and emotion.

Dennis C. Daley, PhD, is a professor of psychiatry in the department at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Daley has written over 300 publications including books and workbooks on recovery from addiction, mental illness, or co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, emotions or moods and family recovery.


Antoine Douaihy, MD, is associate professor of psychiatry, medical director of Addiction Medicine Services and medical director of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic's inpatient dual diagnosis programs. He has authored or co-authored numerous books and chapters, papers and recovery guides for individual and families.
