Rarely is the barbed edge of mother love described with such scorching wit and raw emotion as it is in Vivian Gornick's reissued memoir. Fierce Attachments zigzags between a Bronx tenement teeming with immigrants in the 1940s and New York in the 1980s. It chronicles an almighty struggle between the author and her mother, a stubborn rabble-rouser bursting with tart, angry pronouncements, moxie, and an undeniable measure of charm. Waving away an "Eastern religionist" trying to sell her on his god, she raps out: "Young man, I am a Jew and a socialist. I think that's more than enough for one lifetime, don't you?" Her husband's untimely death is the occasion for such wild histrionics--screaming, refusing to walk, flinging herself into the grave--that when Gornick works the Middle East years later as a journalist, the ululating cries and fainting mourners at funerals seem comfortably familiar. The rapid-fire flow of confidences and furious arguments between the duo mellow slightly, believably, as they grow older together.

This supple, energized memoir chronicles Gornick's volatile relationship with her mother and her unsuccessful battle to reject a legacy of hatred, depression, humiliation and self-pity. An able storyteller with a keen ear for dialogue, Gornick (Essays in Feminism effectively montages the intimate, crude kaffeeklatsches in the Bronx tenement of her youth with street scenes from present-day Manhattan. Particularly vivid is the portrait of Nettie, the sensual, Gentile outsider among Jewish immigrant neighbors, who drives a deeper wedge between mother and daughter when she takes the young Gornick under her tutelage. The author's inherited rage particularly doomed her relationships with men, she feels, and she supplies bleak details from her failed marriage as well as her affairs with an older married man and a psychotic childhood love. Unfortunately, the insightful "deprivation litany" bogs down with "knee-jerk antagonism," therapy-talk and self-indulgence as a 48-year-old Gornick obsessively censures an 80-year-old mother.

A roller coaster ride for mothers and daughters

Searing memories, fine writing, leaves the reader breathless and of very mixed feelings about this extreme self- and other-revelation. Revelation is clearly not in the service of sensationalism. Rather, the telling heightens the understanding of any mother or daughter about issues common to all of us. So I found it inspired much thoughtfulness on my part. But, privacy falls victim. Was this book written while Gornick's mother was still alive? Much more akin to the daughter than to the mother, and quite horrified by some of the mother's actions, I nevertheless empathized with what would (I imagine) have been very hard for her to read. And yes, other reviewers have said the book presents both mother and daughter's sides of the story. Well worth reading. You don't even have to be Jewish, though familiarity with the culture of the period of Gornick's childhood helps a lot.

About the Author
Jack Shostak, Associate Director of Statistics, manages a group of statistical programmers at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. A SAS user since 1985, he is the author of SAS Programming in the Pharmaceutical Industry, and coauthor of Common Statistical Methods for Clinical Research with SAS Examples, Third Edition, as well as Implementing CDISC Using SAS: An End-to-End Guide. Shostak has published papers for the Pharmaceutical SAS Users Group (PharmaSUG) and the NorthEast SAS Users Group (NESUG), and he contributed a chapter, "Reporting and SAS Tool Selection," in the book Reporting from the Field. He is active in the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) community, contributing to the development of Analysis Data Model (ADaM), and he serves as an ADaM trainer for CDISC. Shostak received an MBA from James Madison University and a BS in statistics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Great book for students!

I am a Doctor of Pharmacy student currently on my Infectious Diseases rotation in the final year of my curriculum. I loved the idea of this book and purchased it through the Nerdcore Medical kickstarter as soon as I discovered it. Infectious Disease diagnosis, pathology, and pharmacotherapy is a fascinating field that is often challenging for many students. I am not really into fantasy gaming and stories, but this book is dense with accurate information and it's styling definitely helped me as a mnemonic to build my memorization of antibiotic spectra and coverage. This book and the other games and products from Nerdcore Medical were definitely more helpful to me as a memory aid than the other comparables I have tried like SketchyMicro, Made Ridiculously Simple series, etc. In summary, I love this book!

If this were one of a series (and I wish it were), I'd buy the whole series right now.

I'm a DVM, not an MD, and I've never been into fantasy gaming but I love this book more than words can describe. The illustrations are beautiful, and the concepts and descriptions are so clever that I get at least one delighted giggle from each page. I've also learned some really interesting new facts, such as the story of Balto the sled-dog (I am a veterinarian after all;), which I looked up after being intrigued by the reference to him in the description of C. diphtheriae. This book would make a wonderful and unique gift for anyone in the medical sciences. I just bought another copy as a gift for my boss.

A book we cannot ignore

When I first read Psychic Discoveries Behind the Iron Curtain in 1971, I realized that we had better not let an ESP gap become the next missle gap. At the time I was working as a systems engineer on a project that was not practical with the technology that was then available, and decided that I wanted to research the ideas in this book instead. However, when I told them this at work, I was let go the next day. If I was going to research these issues I would have to do it on my own time using my own money. While we still don't have all the answers, or even know all the questions that must be asked to unravel these mysteries, much work has been done by many different researchers both here and abroad to at least verify that these psychic phenomena are real, if not always reproducible at will. It turns out that much depends on sunspot activity and the phases of the moon insofar as it affects changes in the Earth's magnetic field. There is an updated version of this book that consists of a condensed versiou of PDBTIC plus an update on research conducted behind the Iron Curtain since the overthrow of communism in Eastern Europe. Ironically, one of the most important discussions in the original edition was omitted in the new one, indicating that even the authors failed to appreciate its significance. Unfortunately, a bedbug problem forced me to have to get rid of most of my books including this one, so I was thrilled to find a copy readily available at AMAZON.COM I plan to purchase the new edition too. For anyone interested in psychic phenomena, this is probably the best first book to read.

Precedent-Setting Book

THIS is the book which took the stigma of "unscientific" out of the subject of the psychic realm. It changed me--it opened my mind. The international effort at quantifying psi effects is well documented in this my second copy. Your biases may poo-poo this book, but it would be a feeble effort. The research is just so overwhelming internationally to refute. More scientists are standing up for such efforts and applauding it. This is the book that started even more serious world-wide research, and forms a textbook for the inquirers. Worth the money at all cost.

An important, modern classic!

This is a little known book that changed the world, as we knew it. As an adept occultist, I was thrilled to obtain an excellent example of a first addition of this 'infamous' work. This is the book that caused US intelligence agencies to soil their shorts! It prompted the CIA to initiate the funding for "Remote Viewing" research and training programs - which culminated in the "Stargate" program. Remote viewing has now become part of our collective popular culture. Courses (often taught by some of the official program participants), are still growing in popularity and number. Even movies have been made about this phenomenon. The data obtained on remote viewing has become important to consciousness research. And modern consciousness research has change the paradigm of how we define us - what it is to be human. We are now seeing a radical redefining of what it is to be human. And this little known book was the catalyst for the land-slide change in our post modern definition of humanity.

Forget the pounds - do it for the pain relief!-WITH UPDATE!

My husband can't eat gluten and I ran across this book while doing my endless research on grains, inflammation and diet. This book is wonderful in many ways, but I'm going to focus my review on the information the book covers on grains and why we shouldn't be eating them. Give it chance. Don't immediately think this is the Atkins diet only with organic foods. Don't roll your eyes and think that this whole "gluten-free" thing you keep hearing about is some trend that the celebrities are talking about. This book spells out what grains do to us. Even though we had removed wheat from our diet, we had really just replaced it with a lot of corn products and other seemingly "safe" grains. We were overweight, always hungry, and my husband had a lot of pain throughout his body - just mysterious aches and pains everywhere. I was beginning to think we needed to get to a fibromyalgia specialist or a pain management doctor. I kept hanging onto this book and after several weeks of prodding, I finally got hubby to agree to give me a month on this diet. It was not an easy sell because he had already given up so many favorite foods by going gluten free, but I finally got him to say "yes." I cleaned out the pantry, made a shopping list, bought the food and we started in mid-January. Now we are in early March and we've both lost about twenty pounds each. Attention Ladies - the belly fat came off -six inches worth off my waist (I'm 49-not easy to do). But that is not why I love Mark Sisson and this book - not at all. I love it because the body-wide pain my husband had is nearly gone. He said he feels better than he has since he was a young man. I am so grateful to Mark Sisson because I was days away from looking into prescription pain relief for my husband as he deteriorated before my eyes. I hope some day I can meet Mr. Sisson and shake his hand. This morning as I left for work, my husband was bopping around the kitchen, making breakfast and looked happy and healthy. A few weeks ago he was hobbling around like an old man. His mother called me crying when she saw him walking from his car into her apartment building because she said he looked 80 years old.

Do yourself a favor and give it a month. Many people say the foods on this diet are expensive, and it is a shock to buy organic produce and meat, but a week or two into the diet, you are just not very hungry and I have found that I actually spend less on groceries. I buy grass-fed ground beef and large packs of organic chicken from Costco. We eat loads of organic salad, broccoli and kale. If we have a sweet craving we eat a little dark chocolate. Even if you can't buy totally organic - just apply the principles in the book and avoid the sugar and grains and you will feel like a new person.

Bottom line - we both feel great and my husband's pain is soon to be a thing of the past. It's great to have smaller pants, but it's even greater to have our health improved in such a short period of time.

UPDATE: September 2012 - my husband and I continue to shrink. This is the first time I have ever lost more weight than him (40 pounds)and that's just because he eats more fruit smoothies than I do. The big news is that my husband's bloodwork has completely changed in the time since I wrote the original review. Cholesterol dropped over 40 points, good cholesterol went up and triglycerides went down. CRP (inflammation) went down under 1 which means my husband is out of danger in terms of cardiac risk. This time last year my husband was in daily pain, couldn't remember anything and was being treated by a cardiologist. My husband's doctor told him he would never be able to turn his cholesterol around without statin drugs. This month, when the doctor reviewed my husband's labs he was amazed. He said, and I quote "what was the name of that book again?" This way of eating has changed our lives in ways I could not have imagined - we have so much more energy, brain fog is gone, more new pants for me, more inches off my waist, and people who haven't seen us for a while say we look 20 years younger. This plan takes commitment, but if you truly clean out the junk foods (grains) in your house and hang in there to get through the initial cravings, you will never look back. It is such a relief to never be hungry and not have to always think about food. If you are heading down the heart attack path of high cholesterol and your doctor is saying you have to get on statins - do this instead. If you have pain from arthritis or fibromyalgia, try this. It is truly life changing.

This book changd my life - BUY IT!

I feel silly writing a review for a book that already has so many reviews. But I want to put this here for those who are looking for a review that they can really trust. Check my profile and you will see that I am a long term top reviewer for amazon - I am not paid, I give my honest opinion, I don't pull any punches, and I share my opinions only to help others who love books like I do.

I bought this book in February based on the recommendation from a friend who had lost 50 lbs doing this diet. Honestly, I thought she must be exaggerating about all of the health benefits she had gotten from this lifestyle. But I had been having some serious health problems and I was desperate enough to try anything.

A bit of background: I have always eaten a very "healthy" diet - whole grains, tons of organic veggies and fruits, cooking from scratch, eating almost no junk food at all. I spent most of my adult life as a vegetarian as well.

In 8 weeks on the Primal Blueprint plan, I lost 27 lbs. I was able to go off my blood pressure medication. I feel energetic and GOOD all the time. Gone are the constant muscle & joint aches, the serious GI problems, the chronic exhaustion - it has completely changed my life. After the first 2 weeks I found the diet part to be very easy to follow [there is a detox period that can range from 1-3 weeks depending on the person].

I feel 30 years younger [I'm only 43!]. I am energetic and happy, I am able to excel in my athletic pursuits, I can play with my kids and keep up with them, I feel like a new woman.

This book has changed my life in a miraculous way. I feel so strongly about it that I have purchased several copies and given them to friends. Three of my friends are now doing this lifestyle with me and ALL of them have seen very similar improvements in health, weight, and the way that they feel. [One of my friends has her whole family on this plan and they have ALL seen amazing improvement and serious weight loss].

So, if you are tired of being fat and tired and of feeling bad all the time - this book will be the best money you ever spend. It is a serious life changer. I feel totally indebted to the author and I am extremely grateful that I decided to buy this book and try the diet.

[Update July 28 2012 - I have now lost 50 lbs using this book! The weight just keeps coming off and I feel awesome!]

Solid Info, But Not For the 50+ Woman

Without question, the logic of this book is rock-solid. And as time goes on, the theory that it's the carbs that are making us fat will be seen as truth, not cutting-edge theory.

However, for anyone buying this book for weight loss, particularly post-menopausal women, you may have to go elsewhere for help. I've been doing this diet for a solid two months, and I've actually gained three pounds. And believe me, I've been diligent...no cheating, no overdoing it on the calories.

What's funny about Mark's web site and books (I have two) is that in the photos that accompany them, he proudly shows off his strapping physique (good for him). But the woman he's with is clearly much younger than him. Undoubtedly, she's doing the primal thing, too, but as any post-menopausal woman knows, your weight issues before and after "the change" are two entirely different animals.

I even went to marksdailyapple.com for advice, but the only listing that came up under a search for menopausal weight loss was one discussion board piece written by a woman who'd suddenly gained weight after menopause, even while following the whole primal protocol. Her solution was to severely restrict her calories.

But that was the ONLY INFO on his site...or in this book for that matter...for the 50+ gal. Not criticizing his theories here...just alerting women like myself that you may feel a bit left out of this whole discussion. I'm currently researching other books that will address this sudden weight gain. (I've gained 18+ pounds in just 3 years. Pretty freaky when you've been very thin your whole life.) If anyone has some suggestions for me, I'd appreciate it. I'll be back to check the comments.

The complete material for Self development

This book is the first book I have read that contains the entire material needed for the internal development of a human being.
It explains the ancient philosophical system of Vedanta in a sequential, logical manner that any person, whether from the east or west, would find immensely beneficial and practical.

An excellent, traditionally based introduction

Swami Parthasarathy has written a number of books, including one on the Gita, one on Shankara's Atmabodha and commentaries on several of the Upanishads. The Vedanta Treatise was his attempt to summarize Vedanta from his readings of the classical texts and from his studies with his own guru, Swami Chinmayananda. He still travels the world giving lectures on the Gita and also runs a school in Bombay, which provides a three-year residential course on Vedanta. An excellent introductory book, it tends to be more practical than theoretical, emphasizing bhakti and karma yoga aspects more than those of j~nAna. This is in line with the quotation on all of his cassettes that "The Bhagavad Gita is a technique, a skill for dynamic living, not a retirement plan".

I found this book to be a clear and logical explanation of the the most basic questions of human existence. Written in simple and easily understandable language,this book appeals to all types of readers. For the casual browser, it is an introduction to the fundamentals of philosophy (Who am I? what is the purpose of life? How should I live my life? etc). For a serious student of philosophy, it explains the subtle nuances of thinking that are the essence of Indian philosophy (the theory of causation, the four yogas, states of consciousness etc). For a seeker, it provides a window through which we can glimpse the road to self realization. Swami Parthasarathy has distilled the knowledge of an ancient civilization to make it accessible to the average person and relevant to the world we live in. Vedanta Treatise is a handbook for day-to-day life which explains the mystical precepts that govern human existence and provides practical knowledge to achieve success in the present.

About the Author

Margo Mastropieri, Ph.D., is University Professor, Professor of Special Education, and past Coordinator of the Special Education Program, College of Education and Human Development, George Mason University. She has served as a Diagnostic-Remediator for the Learning Center at Mount Holyoke College, and as a classroom teacher for students with special needs, from preschool to secondary levels, in Massachusetts and Arizona. Prior to her present position, she served as Professor of Special Education at Purdue University, and as Assistant Professor of Special Education at Utah State University, where she also worked as a researcher at the Early Intervention Research Institute. She earned her Ph.D. from Arizona State University. She has co-directed federally funded research projects in mnemonic strategy instruction, inclusive science and social studies education, and writing instruction at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels, in addition to directing undergraduate and doctoral level training grants. From 1991 to 1997 she served as Co-Editor of Learning Disabilities Research & Practice, the journal of the Division for Learning Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children. From 1992 to 2011 she served as Co-Editor of the research annual Advances in Learning and Behavioral Disabilities (Emerald). Since 2009 she has served as Co-Editor of Exceptional Children. Among her publications are over 200 journal articles, 60 chapters in books, and 30 co-authored or co-edited books. In 2010, Margo was the recipient of the Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award, which is the Commonwealth's highest honor for all faculty at Virginia's public and private colleges and universities.

 

Tom Scruggs is University Professor and Professor of Special Education, in the College of Education and Human Development, George Mason University. He served as a classroom teacher for students with special needs, including gifted students, from preschool to secondary levels in Massachusetts and Arizona. Prior to his present position, he served as Professor of Special Education at Purdue University, where he also had served as Director of the Purdue Achievement Center; and as a Research Assistant Professor at Utah State University. He earned his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. He has directed or co-directed externally funded research projects in peer tutoring, test-taking skills, mnemonic strategy instruction, and inclusive science and social studies education, at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. From 1991 to 1997 he served as Co-Editor of Learning Disabilities Research & Practice, the journal of the Division for Learning Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children. From 1992 to 2011 he served as Co-Editor of the research annual Advances in Learning and Behavioral Disabilities (Emerald). Since 2009 he has served as Co-Editor of Exceptional Children. Among his publications (mostly in collaboration with Margo Mastropieri) are over 200 journal articles, 61 chapters in books, and 31 co-authored or co-edited books.

 

Both authors are the recipients of the 2006 “CEC Special Education Research Award,” as well as the 2011 “Distinguished Research Award” from the American Educational Research Association: Special Education Special Interest Group for their research efforts in working with and advocating on behalf of individuals with exceptionalities.

Over the past semester, I used this book for a lower graduate-level class in teaching in an inclusive setting and using differentiated instruction. Throughout the course of the class, I read through the entire thing, and it is definitely a good book for this subject. However, I didn't take a liking to the way it was written. In some places, it reads more conversationally at times, but some sections (especially the later chapters) seem to become simply lists and lists of techniques tied together with a few extra paragraphs of text transitioning between the lists. On one hand, these are VERY good lists and ideas, but on the other, this book is a bit hard to approach and read through as a result of this format. In my case, I have not taken any of my methods classes yet, so a lot of this information was new to me; however, I could see this book being redundant if one had already taken their teaching methods classes because of the great amount of overlap.

Also, this book seems to focus on elementary education methods versus methods for secondary teachers. I was also taught by an elementary school principal, so that may have affected the focus, too, but I wish the balance would have been a little bit nicer in this regard. Yes, a lot of the elementary ideas generalize to a secondary setting...but many do not.

All in all, this is a textbook that I plan on keeping to use for ideas later on, but as I went through this class, it definitely was not my favorite one I had to read. 3 stars.

A jewel for anyone studying ancient esoteric wisdom

"A Wish Can Change Your Life" could be called "How to Enhance and Appreciate Your Own Life While Making the World a Better Place for All Human Beings That You Come in Contact With." This book is well written and filled with smile inspiring wit. It is thought challenging, spiritually stimulating and action provoking. The authors impart a tremendous amount of beautiful insight and knowledge into 272 pages that contain mythological stories from all over the world, introspective meditations and interactive exercises. Though deep in content, the book is written so that even an older child can enjoy the stories and application of esoteric instruction. The concepts are easy to understand and a joy to implement. I have been practicing Kabbalah from this book for over a year and it has profoundly changed my life. I attest - wishes do come true! I hope that you give your wish a chance to change your life too!

Five stars just aren't enough

For those who already know something about Kabbalah this book offers bold and exciting new insights. And for those who are newcomers to the subject prepare yourself for an empowering and always entertaining journey through the Tree of Life. For this is no ordinary book, this is an experiential sequence of life-altering encounters with the ten spheres of the Tree itself. And upon completion of the book I am certain that each and every reader will look afresh both at themselves and their world. Written with wit, originality, and an expansive grasp of history, mythology, religion and popular culture, this is a book that I can reccomend without hesitation.

This book is amazing and easy to use

I have been teaching creative expression and manifestation classes and this book really brings the concepts to reality. Most Kabbalah books are hard to understand and complicated. This one is not! The book is a magical journey and should not be done alone. The miracles are so profound you will want someone doing it with you to share your discoveries. The story telling is wonderful and the activities are clear and insightful. I have read this book 5 times or more and I see something new each time. I was so inspired, started teaching workshops around this topic just to say in community and keep the energy going around wishes and dreams fulfilled. Get a copy for yourself and get a copy for a friend, you will love this book.
