There is also a chapter devoted to “problem” periods in earth history, where both the strengths and limitations of stratigraphic methods are illustrated.

A great play

This is a play that sneaks up on you. I had the fortune of seeing it before reading it and I'm glad that I did. The writing is fast and furious and Raine does a terrific job immediately enmeshing her characters in the action. Some of the characters sound a bit similar; however, it is a lovely ensemble piece which leaves you asking several questions when the play is over.

Dramatic - Historic!

"Tribes" is taking the theatre world by storm, and rightfully so. It is an exceptional family drama with a twist. And that twist if Deafness. The oral son of a snobbish college professor has been raised to be grateful for his erudite hearing family and the benefits it has been to him. But in college he falls in love with forbidden fruit: a deaf woman who communicates with American Sign Language. When the boy falls in love, it is not only with the girl, but with her language and the rich Deaf culture she grew up in. We not have the setting for a perfect Romeo and Juliet type of affair in a completely unique setting. I will be directing it at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf next season.

I did not realize this was the British version. There is an American version that I thought I was buying. Also, this electronic edition does not have the option of choosing "location" or "page numbers". The lack of this option is very debilitating for group reading opportunities. If I had known any of the above, I would not have purchased it.

In the first biography in English of the great Argentinian tango singer Carlos Gardel (1890-1935), Collier traces his rise from very modest beginnings to become the first genuine “superstar” of twentieth-century Latin America. In his late teens, Gardel won local fame in the barrios of Buenos Aires singing in cafes and political clubs. By the 1920s, after he switched to tango singing, the songs he wrote and sang enjoyed instant popularity and have become classics of the genre.� He began making movies in the 1930s, quickly establishing himself as the most popular star of the Spanish-language cinema, and at the time of his death Paramount was planning to launch his Hollywood career.

Collier's biography focuses on Gardel's artistic career and achievements but also sets his life story within the context of the tango tradition, of early twentieth-century Argentina, and of the history of popular entertainment.

The title of this study is a giveaway to its contents: worthy, comprehensive, and ponderous. In recording the life of Gardel, an Argentinian singer who popularized the tango in France, Spain, and the United States, the author has produced a narrative as dull as the tango is sparkling. Gardel, whom Collier compares to Maurice Chevalier and Al Jolson, rose from a childhood in the Buenos Aires slums to success as a singer and Latin American film star in the 1930s and died in a plane crash at the height of his popularity. This book does an excellent job of placing Gardel and tango music in the context of Argentinian society. A must for fans of Carlos Gardel

This is a very important work on a very important artist (singer, composer, movie star) of the 20's and 30's, who died at an early age in a plane accident, after making 4 movies in NYC.
This biography by Simon Collier is the only authoritative work on Carlos Gardel available in English. It shows great understanding of Gardel's life, his musical career, and the cultural, social and political context.
I recommend it most highly.

Great intermediate intro to subject

This is a very well written book on digital TV for the intermediate student or reader. It steers a middle course between the more technical or professional level TV books, such as the well known Whitaker volume published by McGraw Hill, and the more basic books such as The Dummies guides. For me, it was just right since the more advanced books were a bit too hard for me yet, but the easier books were too basic.

The book is especially strong on the digital compression issues, and the chapter on middleware and operating systems is really exceptional, a subject that often isn't addressed as completely in some other volumes. The second to the last chapter provides a nice summary of the main features and differences between satellite, terrestrial broadcast, and cable digital TV.

It's still a fairly technical book, though, and you should already have some basic knowledge of what digital TV is and how the three main types, which are terrestrial, satellite, and cable-based digital TV, differ from each other. Obviously, there are many similarities, but they differ most in the use of different signal modulation techniques and the nature and extent of the error correction in order to best make use of the available bandwidth.

For example, obviously satellite and broadcast TV are most susceptible to multipath interference and other types of noise, hence the signal to noise ratio of these technologies is lower than cable. Cable has a much better signal (25 to 30 db instead of perhaps 6 db), and yet suffers from internal echoes due to impedance mismatches along the long segments of cable. This implies that broadcast and satellite TV need more robust and extensive error correction, which is true. However, satellite may reach areas too remote for typical cable.

The book also has several chapters dealing with the more technical aspects of compression, error correction, etc., for those who are interested. Overall, an excellent brief book (less than 300 pages), and it's also nicely bound on good quality paper in signatures so that the binding will hold up better over time and the pages won't fall out.

OK, but nothing new.

Exciting title. Grabs your attention, because it's the way of the future, but reads much like an overview, and doesn't provide much by way of new insight.

Excellent as a reference source. The book is fairly inexpensive, so it is worth the money. If you purchase it, you won't feel cheated.
