I'm surprised to see how many people seem to not enjoy the amount of direct quotes and contradictions in this book. The stories of Anne Boleyn and the Tudors in general have always been told, often inaccurately and accentuated just for dramatic purposes. It seems obvious to me that this book was a direct result of Weir's frustrations in seeing other historians and authors tell readers a one-sided story, or even a partially fabricated one.
Weir's willingness to show both sides of the story of Anne's fall, however contradictory they may be, is the only way to tell the most accurate story. I don't see a lot of her personal opinion in the book, as some have said in their reviews. In fact, I think it's a very fair depiction of events from 500 years ago that we currently have no way to know the whole truth about. I've also seen that people think it's repetitive, but I haven't found that. The only repetition I've seen is to remind you of previous facts when they become relevant again, which I think is necessary when you're trying to make such a fact-heavy book readable by anyone.
I definitely don't think it's for everyone, but I would recommend it to anyone with particular interest in the Tudors. It's not an "easy read", because of all the information, but worth the time spent. Even if you had formed your own opinion of Anne Boleyn before reading it, I think that it will probably make you question yourself. There were a lot of events and facts that I had just assumed were fact, and found out through this book that they were probably speculation. I think it's a fresh retelling of naturally dramatic and fascinating events we've heard about a thousand times, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I will start off by saying that I did enjoy this book! it was well written and well researched! Alison Weird did her homework, but there were things that I just disagreed with. One point was that Henry must have believe the the charges against Anne and that he would not have just had her condemned. Another point she made was that this whole affair was the lone work of Cromwell, and that if the king was involved in the business there would be evidence. Hmm! If he is trying to rid himself of his queen why would there be evidence left behind??? It has already shown that Henry was able to mask his feelings, so that does not make sense to me. Nor do I believe that the charges took him by surprise, I believe he knew from the start. But it had to appear as if he knew nothing at all. There are many more points that were made in this book that did not sit well with me, but overall I still really liked it but could not see myself giving it a 5 star!!!

Struggled thru it somehow

I adore Alison Weir's writing, and am a fanatic about english history but this book was a chore to get thru.
Weir presents a half dozen possibilities for every thing - theories, quotes that are barely understandable, psycological conclusions, and then turns around and says they may or may not be true. I kept wanting her to take a stand, when did she gets so tentative? We're all smart enough to handle the discomfort of disagreeing with her. Just tells us what YOU think, you always have before! I believe proveable history is scarce, especially that far back, so just go out on a limb and tell us your opinion, that's what you do best. I still look forward to your next book. You're still my favorite english history writer!
