It’s an insidious disease that is crippling companies, destroying our economy, and crushing potential. It’s infecting the very roots of business performance, and it’s spreading fast. It isn’t the recession, market volatility, scandal, or greed.
It’s entitlement.
And it may be killing your business.
In myriad ways, entitlement has been cultivated for decades. As a result, too many employees today believe that they are entitled to a paycheck simply because they show up. Brad Hams has proven that we are not doomed to a path of entitlement and dependence. After more than 15 years working with hundreds of companies, he knows that the vast majority of employees addicted to entitlement actually want to engage, want to contribute, and feel much better about themselves when they are in an environment that requires them to do so.
Now, with Ownership Thinking, Hams shares his strategy that will increase your company’s productivity, employee retention, and profitability:
- The Right Education: Teach employees the fundamentals of business and finance, how their company makes money, and how they add—or take away—value.
- The Right Measures: Identify the organization’s Key Performance Indicators and teach employees to forecast results in an environment of high visibility and accountability.
- The Right Incentives: Create incentive plans that are self-funding and clearly align employees’ behavior to the organization’s business and financial objectives.
Your employees will learn to think and act like owners and will become active participants in the financial performance of the business. They will gain the self-esteem that is only possible through achievement and will reap rewards that are in alignment with the success of their organization. Meanwhile, you will enjoy your role more, sleep better at night, and leave a legacy that is far more inspiring and significant than you dreamed possible.

Real Results

Ownership Thinking is a breath of fresh air--a way to manage and grow your business that is good for owners, but not at the expense of employees. Far too often, employees get stuck in a rut known as entitlement (meaning they feel they should be able to collect a paycheck for showing up, regardless of performance). If you own a business or manage employees, chances are you've experienced this. This type of behavior is bad for the business, bad for the individuals that work there, and bad for the economy. Brad Hams shows organizations how to implement a program that turns employees from paycheck-collecting drones to engaged and active participants. As a result, employees are more fulfilled and returns improve. Simply put, Ownership Thinking shows employers how to get employees to think--and act--like owners. The book is a step-by-step guide to implementing ownership thinking including ensuring employees understand the financials and how they impact them, and providing bonus plans that pay for themselves. Hams skips the theory, and shows readers how to put his proven program to work, one he has implemented in hundreds of organizations (large and small).

Must read for any business owner, manager or employee
By Steve Goldman
How do you get more engagement from your employees? How do you contribute more to the success of your company? As the CEO of a 100 person company, we had great intentions for getting everyone engaged, rewarded and aligned on common profitability goals. Intentions only got us part of the way though. Ownership Thinking outlines the processes and tools needed to create lasting and meaningful changes to culture, financial success and overall company growth. We now have every new hire read this book so they fully understand our culture and the way we operate. Highly recommended read.

A Rare 5 star
By Jim Estill
I rarely give a 5 star rating to a book but this is one I will share with friends.
Hams book is filled with practical advice on how to create good culture in a business.
The book was dedicated to Ayn Rand (of Atlas Shrugged fame). Atlas Shrugged is a must read for any entrepreneur. Dedicating it to Rand does indicate the leanings of the author.
Ownership Thinking started with Hams personal story which hooked me even before getting into the book. Hams is a constant learner like me.
One comment he makes is "share the insomnia" which I thought was good. Basically, get others in the company to care as much as you do.
Summarizing some of the key points:
Great companies have the right:
Incentives (that become self funding)
Education (train people well)
Measures (measure what counts)
People (in the end, success is all about the people)
Great Companies:
Care
Have Fun
Have High expectations
There are good chapters with practical ideas and things to implement like Rapid Improvement Plans (RIPs he calls them) and Huddles.
The job of any entrepreneur is to choose and create the right culture. As a company grows I always say "coach on culture but let your people make decisions".
